I have a problem with the closing of my couplers on my 20-6617 Southern passenger cars coupler. Pushing another car into the open coupler and it will not close, I've even tried it with my finger, no go there either. If I pull down on the thumb piece it will close and it will latch once I let go.
Any idea how to correct this problem?

It stays closed no problem, I can't close it when open by pushing on it, unless I pull down a little on the thumb release. I have the opposite problem from most. Where it won't hold, mine won't close when you push two cars together. But once I close it and connect them there good to go.
ive always had trouble with MTH couplers. if you don't want to uncouple, I use a small black plastic cable tie and sinch it up and cut
the tail off. the coupler will never open and if I ever want to sell the car, the coupler has not been compromised I simple cut the
cable tie off.
Carefully spray a little graphite into it.
The coupler locks very tight. I'm thinking the pin may need to be trimmed to an angle on the bottom so it matches the angle on the part it is suppose to slide on.
I have no problem with it holding once I do close it. I just have to lower the pin a tiny bit so it will close and lock.
@rtraincollector, did you ever resolve this issue? I have the same set with the same coupler issue, the couplers won’t close unless I pull down a little on the release.
I do not believe I did try to. There is a suggestion above, but did not try it. That was 4 years ago. I have a hard time remembering yesterday. But I would of remembered doing that if I did.
Working with just one of the couplers, I opened it, sprayed a little graphite in, and let it sit for a day. It’s still a little stiff to close, but it is at least operational again!
