Hi guys & gals

I am thinking of getting this unit because of size & money . I know it is limited to a 100 watts !

I have one proto 2 engine & two proto 1 engines & 1 Lionel conventional engine so far.

I have a proto 3 engine  ordered .

How big of a layout are you running your commander on ?

How many engines are on the layout at the same time?

Thanks in advance  & Merry Christmas .

Do yourself a favor. Purchase a complete DCS set. You'll be able to operate all of your command and conventional engines with it. MTH makes the DCS Commander primarily for HO trains. It's underpowered for O gauge (6 amp maximum) and lacks many of the features of a complete DCS set.

Two cautions:

  • Buy your DCS Remote and TIU new from a reputable MTH dealer. Jason's Trains has great prices and is where I bought mine
  • Insist on a set that has the latest Rev. L TIU. Jason's sells only the latest model DCS hardware.

The DCS Commander (note the missing Remote) is a single piece DCS system that will control multiple locomotives but has a number of limitations over the full DCS system.

You're right...forgot about that item.

My -Remote- Commander works well; if you intend to have a small layout it will

be quite adequate. I use TMCC, etc, more by far, but I can run PS2/3 and TMCC

at the same time. I don't, though (too much stress!).

I'm not an "MTH guy" when it comes to control; nice locos and cars, but the

Command system...not so much.

Even having said what I did above, if you prefer MTH's way of doing things, buy the Full Monty DCS System and get on with it. It's probably less than some of your locos.
