Both!
Neal Jeter
I’ll be an early adopter of both. Lionel because of the Legacy Users and DCS because my original run TIU is dead.
It’s really not a competition. It’s what suits your needs the best based on your roster. I imagine there will be an equal number of one, the other, and both.
Neither for now . Most likely for the future is the Base 3.
Base 3!
My TIU ver. L with attached Wifi is still good.
Both for me as well.

I've got the Lionel Base 3 on order (from Trainworld, of course). Can't wait until it arrives sometime this summer (hopefully)!
I'm also planning on adding the MTH DCS WTIU in the near future because MTH and Atlas make locomotives that I want to have running on my layout.
Trainworld lists the availability of both by the end of August. We know for sure that the Lionel Base 3 is now in production making an August availability quite plausible. Do we know if the MTH 50-1039 is currently in production?

The new TIU is in production and according to Rich Foster of MTH at the show Spring York show it’s supposed to be here in June. They are just testing and retesting to make sure it’s good to go.

Did he mention which June
Base 3 for me, have it on order for years now hope to see it soon. I already have two TIU's and WiFi so I don't need them.
My club has 2 TIUs, 1 for each 2 of the 4 operating lines and wired up with the MTH WiFi unit to each TIU. DCS works fine on our layout, so does the WiFi units. WiFi works great!
As for base 3, no need as we have cab1s, cab1Ls and the Legacy system. Club members prefer the cab1Ls. As soon as the base 3 comes out, hoping the price of the base1L drops to reasonable pricing, we’re buying that as backup if the legacy base ever fails.
Maybe down the road, the club will buy a base 3 but not until it is released, used and re-used to a year’s time so the new customers can be Lionel’s testers.
Just my club’s feeling towards a newly released system.
Base 3 for me!

Both of course. What a silly question! lol.
As long as the old 990 and Cab 2 are working I’m not interested in Base 3. But since I recently added DCS to my layout via the Explorer to run my Atlas P42s, I’m anxiously awaiting the WTIU. Hey Ken Jr, any ETA on the unit?. I’ve had it on preorder with you since the late 70s!
Put me down for the DCS WIFI. Glad to see the price wasn't crazy. Thanks MTH.
Never rush testing. It only costs you more in the long run to do so.
Base 3. Being new to the O gauge hobby(2.5yrs.), I have purchased Lionel Legacy and LC+2.0 locomotives, so the Base 3 fits my needs for now.

I have the Legacy system with WiFi and several TIU's with WiFi, so neither right now. If a capability I desire shows up in the BASE3 in the future, I'll probably add that to the layout. I don't see the new MTH WTIU in my future, it doesn't support the DCS remote except lashed to the box, that doesn't work for me.
BASE 3 but only once it has been out for a while and proven, with user feedback that issue repairs are timely.

Total agreement here. I would never willing trade my Cab 2 for an app. Unfortunately I joined the MTH world too late, long after the handheld controllers were off the market. So right now I’m stuck with DCS Explorer, Which is fine as far as it goes, but it doesn’t let you access the majority of the cool features available on MTH/Atlas engines. As far as the apps go, I find the MTH app to be more appealing, as the Lionel app seems a bit toyish to me ( yes I know we’re talking about “toy” trains here!).
FWIW in this conversation, both my Current Legacy System and DCS TIU are first runs. Both have served me very well. It was only this past fall that my TIU started acting up. Rather than deal with getting another one I figured it was a good excuse to get the new one.
In his last livestream, Dave at Lionel said that the Base 3 will arrive in July or August.
I hope my current Legacy system will outlive me. If not then I would support the new Cab3. I would not utilize all the new features though cause I will only the Cab1L. I will not use a phone to run my trains.
