Hi everyone,

I am considering purchasing a used PRR Decapod 20-3254 with the short tender. I usually check if these vintage steam engines (2006) are 3V by looking at the manual on the MTH site for the 2.4V battery. In this case the manual indicated the 8.4 V battery meaning of course this is not a 3V loco. However the pix on the manual is of the older version with the long tender, and other steam locos in the 2006 catalog with numbers on on both sides of 3254 are all showing the 2.4V battery. So I am wondering if MTH just posted the older manual for the 20-3117 (long tender) which uses the 8.4V. Also in the feature discription, it mentions the 3254 having 2/3rail conversion capability. Was that only offered on 3V locos?

Anyone have any info on the electronics in this loco or is there a way to look at the  online pixs to figure that out?

Thanks and best regards,

Walter

To refresh my memory, is it the 5-volt we should be concerned about the capacitor's blowing up? Or is the case where 5-volt PS2 engines and a white 9-volt-looking battery are the suspects? It's insane we have to worry about this.

Yes & Yes Paul, ….both the battery & the capacitors can be an issue …..as far as it being insane to have to worry about it, remember, when discussing PS2 electronics, we are talking about stuff 20 + years old now. Father Time has caught up to the stuff, ….you can’t go 20 years without your car needing attention, or most household appliances…..
