I have an MTH gas turbine set with a DCRU electronic reverse by QSI. When I first put it on the track it ran perfectly and cycled thru forward-neutral-reverse with no problems. Then I tried to program the squeaking break sounds in neutral by holding down the whistle button and then releasing after 3 seconds. I know I did go past the recommended 8 volts or less and am not 100% sure I was in neutral and not RESET. But now the engine is locked in neutral. The instructions to reset the to factory settings requires me to enter RESET mode and get to feature 18 which is the process of cycling the throttle from full to 8-10 volts 18 times. But it will not let me past feature 1. I put in a fully charged 9 volt battery to see if this resolved the issue but it made no difference.
Does anyone know how I can get out of neutral without accessing the RESET features or how to get get to feature 18? Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong?

Was the battery weak or dead when you first ran it?  If, you can not get the engine to advance past reset #1 then it sounds like an ID fault.  Your engine was susceptible to this condition.

Getting a new chip from MTH resolves the software issue that allows this condition to occur when the engine is shut down on a low battery.

It can also be rest with the proper chip by clearing EEPROM ID conditions in reset position #3 and #17.  The problem is it can occur again if you use the same chip and have a weak battery.  G

The Train Doctor has a point in that some early PS1 engines did not play well unless you had a pure sine wave transformer like a Z4000 or a ZW.  Did your Z1000 always run this engine before?  If you want to order a new chip, you need part number AI-0000037.  You would also give the 30-2009LP so they would know what engine information to burn on the chip. The chip is in the center of circuit board, about the size of your thumb nail.  You use a chip puller to remove it and push in the new chip.  Watch the orientation of the chip, it is angled on one corner to go in a specific way.

FWIW, I was testing a PS/1 locomotive here using the MTH Z750 and their IR remote module.  The operation was AWFUL, and it would repeatedly do things I didn't want it to do, and several times it just sat there when I'd try to get it moving.  I thought I had a bad PS/1 board.

I connected an old KW and there was instant response, everything worked as expected.

Change the transformer, then see if you still have a problem.

I have an old Lionel type KW transformer and hooked it up to my track but it is still not responding. When I first bought the engine several years ago I ran it using the Z1000 transformer with no problems. At the time the battery probably had a good charge on it. It was not until I shut off the engine and then tried to run it again when the battery was almost dead that the problem started.

I am ordering the chip today from MTH and will let you guys know the outcome.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THE VALUABLE AND DETAILED INFORMATION!!!

I am in AWE of your knowledge and eagerness to help others!!!

If you read his first post in detail he was able to run the engine and move through reset positions initially, so it was not a transformer compatibility issue.  Additionally, he could get from Reset 0 to reset #1, but no further.  That is a clear indicator of an ID fault.  The second being an engine on the ID fault list.

Remember to get a chip puller from Radio Shack.

You order the chip as AI-0000037 then order a sound file as:

AE-3020091  (This is AE- followed by your engine stock number without hypens).

I was finally able to resolve the issue using the information gathered from a number of you.
I did try to purchase the "reset chip" set made by MTH because I could get it quicker then the replacement chip but it did not correct the problem. It took me quite a while to get thru to the MTH service department but I was finally able to purchase the replacement chip plus the programming of the chip for my engine. The part numbers you guys supplied were right on target. I would not have known to order the programming of the chip if it were not for you guys!
Installed the chip and now the engine runs beautifully and cycles thru F-N-R flawlessly.
I am in awe of the wealth of information on this forum but even more so the class of people that contribute. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
