I bought an Rail King ACL E-6 AA Diesel set on eBay.  It was in the Rail King box, wrapped with the MTH paper and ribbon.  This is my first PS-2 engine but I have several non-PS MTH engines as well as legacy Lionel engines.

I am having problems with this set.  There were no instructions but I downloaded them as well as the Conventional Troubleshooting Proto-Sound 2.0 Diesel AA & ABA sheet.

The motorized engine lights, makes sounds (horn and voices), but does not move. The other unit, when attached to the powered engine does not light.  I have pushed the direction button and turned the throttle on and off many times - no change except the horn sounds continuously and very loud in what is apparently neutral.  The voices are distinct.  I tried the procedure to unlock it if it was locked in neutral - no change.  The horn and whistle buttons don't make any change/sound either.  Powered A unit does not work by itself either.

I am using a Z750 with FastTrack 48 in 8x6 foot oval.  It is connected correctly and my other MTH, non-PS, engines work fine on the layout.

I would prefer not to return it but I don't want an expensive ornament.  I am from Talladega, AL.  So I had bought the 4 car Lionel ACL passenger set with the Talladega diner.  I like the E-6 engine so I bought the MTH instead of a Lionel.

I would appreciate any help in getting this to run.  If I can't get it to run, then I'd appreciate any help in finding a nice engine for the silver ACL passenger cars.

Thanks

John,

I once owned this set.

If sounds cut out when you press the direction button on the transformer, or cut out in less than 6-7 seconds when track power is turned off, all that the engine probably needs to get out of neutral is to charge the battery for a few hours (overnight to be sure).

Regardless, if the battery is an MTH "white" one, replace it. You can put an Alkaline 9 volt battery in temporarily to test it.

As I recall, the trailing A unit must be connected via tether to the leading A unit to have lights.
