Many of the MTH engine manuals have a section labeled Loading Engine Firmware "Your MTH PS3.0-equipped locomotive affords you the ability to load Engine firmware. Loader version2.30 or later will allow you to do this. Please refer to the Loader program's instructions for more details. So, as MTH releases new features or updates you will be able to take full advantage without having to ship your favorite engine anywhere..." Has anyone seen engine firmware updates? How is the update accomplished? Is it done by placing an engine on the track while downloading updates? It seems a mystery. I've not seen or found Loader program instructions referred to in the manual. Thanks.

Has anyone seen engine firmware updates?
Yes, MTH has issued firmware updates for its PS3 engines, including some for specific types of engines and also specifically for the PS32 board sets. MTH ASC techs receive notification of these engine firmware releases as part of the tech newsletters.

It's no "mystery".
Updates are loaded using the DCS Loader Program, either the Consumer or Service versions. The process is initiated by placing an engine on a track connected to a powered TIU channel of a TIU that's connected to a PC, and then tapping the icon for "Flash" at the top row of icons on the Loader Programs's screen.

The latest version of the Loader Program and its instructions may always be found on MTH's Protosound2.com web site. Even better, The DCS Companion 3rd Edition and The DCS WiFi Companion 1st Edition each have an extensive section that deals with the use of all of the Loader Program's features and functions.
This and a whole lot more about DCS is all in MTH’s “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!" This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store! |

Thanks Barry for the guidance. I'll see how it works out.
It would be nice if MTH put out a notice, on OGR forum or its website, when firmware is updated. Periodically checking a roster of engines for updates is time consuming.
Robert,
IMO, firmware updates for PS3 engines tend either to be superfluous or obviously needed, i.e., if you need one it's obvious.
An example would be that the smoke output on smaller PS3 steamers is weak. MTH published a new Chain File (firmware) for these steamers that corrects this issue.
Regardless, if you're happy with an engine's performance and behavior, I'd leave it alone. OTOH, if you believe it needs some firmware help, call MTH.
