Hello everyone, first post here!  I'm working on my first layout and I hit my first snag, so I'm hoping to get some advice on what to try next.  I have a MTH PS2 Metra engine (20-2716-1) that I got off ebay which was reportedly unrun by the previous owner.  The engine starts up fine and will travel at low speeds but when speed is increased it will halt at various points in the track.  When it stops, everything shuts down, then after a few seconds it comes back on and starts its startup routine.  It won't make it half way around the track at decent speeds.  Here are my troubleshooting notes...

1.  Tried 2 different tracks (small circle), same problem

2.  Happens while running in DCS (with remote commander) and in conventional mode

3.  Tried charging battery

4.  Tried replacing battery

5.  It even shuts down and restarts if I leave it idling for a while

6.  Lights dim on shut-down but sound stays going for a while (10 seconds maybe)

7.  Tried using 2 different transformers (80 watt Lionel and 75 watt MTH)

So I thought for sure it was the battery, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  Any ideas?  My hope is to get this thing running by xmas for the kids to enjoy... coming down to the wire!

Since sound goes on for 10 seconds the battery is fine. Sounds like a broken pickup wire to me.

Also Possible track problems.

With a meter, check ohms between the 2 (or more) pickup rollers. It should read very low numbers.

If that passes, Switch to Volts.

Then Hold one lead on an outside rail and run the other lead down the middle rail. Power should read consistent, and drop outs are bad track, fix them.

Repeat holding the lead on the center rail and sliding the outer rails.

If none of these problems if found, The engine will have to be opened to check the power feed to the boards from the Pickups, you could have a wire broken inside the insulation, that will connect for a while and then open making the engine shut down, then power back up as it hits bumps.

To test, Measure ohms, connect your meter to the power wire at the board and at the pickup, wiggle the wires and see if the reading in changing. and drop outs are a bad wire. Replace it.

Naturally, going inside the engine poses risks, you may want to send it for repair instead.

Sounds like an internal issue more than anything else. It is always good to clean everything up, but when the problem still occurs, it may be internal. If that is the case, I would contact MTH and ask for their advice. If you are willing to part with the locomotive for a few weeks and give them the opportunity to address the issue(s), I am quite sure they can fix/repair what is wrong. That is, if you have exhausted all other efforts to try and resolve the matter.

Hope you get her running right soon.

Pete
