I've been waiting several years for MTH to re-issue their Union Pacific Northern so I could purchase a 2-rail version for my layout as they only produced a 3-rail version in their initial run, only to find out that no 2-rails will be produced...again. I've seen plenty of MTH 2-rail GS4's for sale on ebay and at train shows. Thought MTH was returning back to 2-rail again....

MTH just released a -2 version (scale 2 rail) of a Santa Fe Hudson.
When did they announce no 2 rail engines will be produced in the future?
Does that mean no diesels, etc?
Maybe Mojave Mike is confused?
I didn't want to wait for my FEF 3 so I bought a Sunset model in 2 rail. When not available one way find it another. Just wish Sunset did more diesels than the few a decade or so back.
MTH has been making many of their diesels available in 2-rail for several years...I have 6 of the ES44AC's In 2-rail....but I was surprised they weren't continuing that trend with more of the steam engines. I lost out on ordering one of the Sunset engines a few years back (no one's fault but my own). There are 2 Sunset engines available on Ebay right now, but both are 3-rail. And the Overland models are a little to pricey for me right now at $2,400 a pop.
Now I'm sure the diesels sell more 2rail units than the steam. I wish I had a lathe to be able to machine my own stuff but that's just not doable at this time.

Okay, that makes sense, thanx for the answer. Now I just need to keep an eye out for one of those elusive 2-rail Sunset Northerns....
I am in the middle of 2- railing a Lionel FEF. The only thing that is remotely a challenge is the drivers, and Joe Foehrkolb will do them for you for a quarter of what I would charge. Plus, they then are rim-insulated, which is way better than whatever MTH does.
I set out to 2-rail a 2-rail MTH Hudson, and wound up making an entirely new mechanism. That's what I think of the MTH 2- rail steam - it needs to be re-2-railed.
Opinion.
