MTH flat w/ Abrams tanks edit: 3/4/19 w/Atlas flats

The Abrams tanks are not 1/48 scale they are I think 1/56. In the catalog they look way to small but when you actually see them they don't look too bad. Check out one of Eric Siegel's video reviews. He has some sitting on a siding.

i model a WWII military train so I never purchased any.

Thanks John. I saw a sword model of it the other day online and that one looked very good. It too was small though.

They should probably hang just over the edge of the flats if full sized? I remember watching the real video and seeing how they were loaded on the big flats.

It's fast so I stopped it to look. Got a glimpse of how wide it is anyways. DO you know who makes that scale version? Is it Geller also?

I have one of the six car sets.  I model both modern military trains and WWII military trains.  They look cool.  The tanks are metal.  They look good on the TTUX flats.  What prompted me to buy a set in the 2007/2008 time frame was when I saw the actual Abrams tanks in Dagget, CA at the Marine Corp Depot on the way to Vegas.  They were on TTUX cars.  They looked cool in real life and look cool on the layout.  Only a rivet counter would worry about the size of the tanks.  They are very close to scale and you won't be disappointed.  If you have a chance to buy a six car set grab it.  I have both the desert  and green camouflage tanks.

P.S: I like the Geller Military Loads also.  But they are pricey.  They are very detailed.  My son bought me a couple for xmas a couple of years ago.

Hi Joe, I have a 1/48 scale M1A1 I bought online from a place called War Tanks.com a few years ago.  Don't know if they are still around.  Mine is made of resin and is 6 1/8 inches long (tank body only) and 2 3/4 inches wide.  I will take some pics when I charge up my camera.  I have mine on either an Atlas or Weaver U.S Army 53 foot flat car.  The tank is not quite as wide as the flat car.

The ones you are looking at look pretty good.

I b ought three 1/50 scale abrams tanks form Diecast Direct. They are nice tanks but a bit spend and they will be going on Lionel PS-4 flats

This is the Abram from "War Tanks" on a MTH Premier 47' flat.  Some day I will bloke and chain it.

Keep in mind that an M1 tank weighs about 70 tons.  Two on a flat car with 4 wheel trucks, doesn't seem right ......

    The MTH tanks look good to me, keep in mind 1/56 to no smaller than 1/43 is larger than 1/48. So I would not put any 1/43 Bradley Fighting Vehicles or Humvees on the same train. Keep any other vehicles you add to 1/50 and you should be fine. The good thing is a M1A1 Abrams is such a BIG tank almost anything you put next to it is going to look small.

    The videos are great too. I always enjoy watching them.

Friend,   If you are interested I can send you photos of M2 Bradleys I built on flat cars and an M60a1e2 made by Tamiya that is on a flat car I have for sale.   I used Weaver 50 ft flats.  The tank models are 1/48 scale.  They are in the green scheme.  Somewhere on one of the  forums I have posted photos of my modern military train with M2 Bradleys, M1A1 Abrams, Humvees, LAV25, LAV Anti Tank, LAV command vechicles and M60A1's, M109 SP howitzers.

That is a good point I thought about . . . A scale Abrams would be too large for me. These look good: 1:56 reduces them a bit so they don't overwhelm everything around them.   I don't have them on my layout in 1:56 or any scale only because they are too modern. Nice looking tanks.   I have a bunch of MTH Shermans and some 1:48 Corgi Pattons on flatcars - they are almost too big, but . . . 

I see the scale Abrams does sit wide on the flat. Seeing it's bigger than the Shermans and Pattons, I wonder if there's some restrictions on it's travels? I mean if it sticks over the sides of the flats, it maybe restricted on mainline travel?? (side clearance?).

 I think I'll order one and see how she looks.

My 1:48 scale M1A1 does not stick out over the sides of my cars but I am using Weaver and Atlas cars.  It's just a WEE bit narrower than the car is wide.  It may be wider than Lionel or Williams.

I have that M60A2 in 1:35 scale and it is pretty awesome looking.  Very futuristic looking.

So True! Somewhere someone needs to make a pair of Buckeye 3 axle trucks and place them under the TTX flats for the Abrams.

Anything, not just tanks (sheet steel being very common) sticking out past the side of the car would rate a Hi/Wide restriction. Of course, the wider the load, the more restrictive the orders would be. The crew handling the restricted car would get an order listing of all mileposts and speed to run where clearances on stationary objects such as rock outcrops, buildings or cars in a siding could be a problem. There would also be noted the max. speed when passing another train and if there is a need for either train to be stopped while they pass. Opposing trains could also get an order restricting their meeting of the Hi/Wide movement.
