A friend of mine just got the MTH Goose, number 30-2154-0 that was built in 1999.

We put it on the tracks and get sound and lights only - he does not have a DCS system, operates conventional. Can not get it to move forward or reverse. We are using a newer Lionel transformer, CW-80.

Any suggestions as to what we are doing wrong?

Thanks

If you are getting sounds and the battery is OK, the problem may be the CW-80 transformer.  MTH's Proto one engines do like many of Lionel's newer transformers.  Once you have the sounds up on the goose, try using the direction button instead of the throttle lever to see if it will cycle into forward.  I have found in many cases, the CW-80 does not go all the way to 0 volts and even though the sounds stop, there seems to be just enough current to not allow the reverse to operate.

Good luck and happy railroading,

Don

I developed an issue with my 30-2203-1 that it would have a problem with the initial start up.  I am using MTH Z-1000 transformer. Someone on this site told me the following and it has always worked for me since.  I set the transformer at about 3-4 volts -about the 11 o'clock position on the Z-1000 and then press the direction button, and it starts up. After this initial start, it then works as you would expect  until you shut it down completely (end of session?). Next time use same initial start as above. Maybe this will work for you.

I agree with Tim. If the SKU is correct, there are no sounds, just a horn, and forward and reverse. The reverse board could be history, if you hit the direction button and the loco doesn't move. When you hit the direction button, hold it for one second, then release. The loco should move forward. Try using a postwar transformer, just to eliminate one variable.
