I am new to O scale ( Grew up with HO and built two layouts) I have one of the MTH GEVO Hybrids on order. It will be my first investment in Power. When I ordered it I was told 3 rail is way to go. So i ordered it with HIRAIL wheels thinking I was going to use gargraves 3 rail track and be all set. I have since realized that I would much rather model in 2 rail. Is anyone running this unit on 2 rail? How does it perform? I am not sure if I can change the order on it or not. I will just be happy when it arrives. I still have a lot to learn about DCS and command control but thats another post... Thanks

I do not have it or model two rail. But this engine is a three rail/two rail engine. This means you can slide a switch to two rail and take off the center pick ups. Not sure if you have to change out the wheel sets. Someone more knowledgeable will pipe in.
Thanks Don. I recently just found out about the 2/3 rail switch. That is a nice feature for sure. If anyone can tell me if the HIRAIL wheels will pose a problem? Will I have to switch them out? Or is Don correct in that the pick ups just get removed? They have a scale wheels option would this be better on 2 rail?
Thanks
Grant
Don, if you ordered the hirail version you can't operate it on 2-rail track because the wheel flanges are too deep. You need to change your order to the scale wheel version. If you do that, then it will work on 2-rai. If you want to go to 3-rail, you can run the scale wheels on 3-rail track because you will get the center rail rollers with the loco and the scale wheels will work on anything but tubular 3-rail track.
I am, it performs great, it's my favorite engine so far. The scale wheels version has fixed pilots and scale wheels so it looks way better. Find out if you can switch it for the 2 rail version, you won't regret it in the long run. Also, if you go with the 3 rail version you would have to change the wheel sets on the RPO car if you want to run it on 2 rail track. I did some detailing on the pilot.

That is one nice looking engine.
I agree that if you wont to run two rail, changing your order is well worth it. It is possible to run the high rail wheels on two rail track,( with the switches set to two rail), If its code 148 track but you wont be able to run it through two rail points. Heres an SD50 from MTH with 2 rail wheels but without fixed pilots, and three rail couplers. (cTr...Choose the Right)

Thanks for the great input fellas. Knowing that the scale wheel version of the GEVO has a fixed pilot sealed the deal!! I contacted Legacy Station and they are working on trying to get me the proper version great pic looking forward to having mine soon... Its on a real slow boat from China
Good call! I am 2 rail also and all of my MTH locos have fixed pilots and scale wheels! They look amazing! Dont mind the 3 rail track its long gone!

I have one with scale wheels and did the preliminary testing on 2-rail track. Runs nicely. Right now it has the rollers in and the 2/3-rail switch set to 3-rail for running at the club.
Like Will, I've been ordering all of my new engines with scale wheels and fixed pilots and I'm not looking back. I even tracked down a scale-wheeled UP Heritage unit and plan to sell the hi-rail one I have. They look great and run well. The club's threatening an intervention, though.
I haven't tested the new Proto-3 engines under DCC yet, but I'm looking forward to it. A couple of my two-rail colleagues are having some pretty good laughs about my recent direction.
One of our group members bought one recently and decided to run it. Fresh out of the box with couplers installed. You'll see it go by in the video a couple times.

I also own MTH GEVO Hybrid in 2 rail and I would agree with most folks change the order if you can. HiRail version is a PITA. You only have to swap the wheels at your expense and you are also stuck with swinging pilots unless you fix them yourself.
Thanks everyone, I have changed the order to scale wheels and will order them this way from now on if there isnt a 2 rail version. I have a few pieces of rolling stock to convert but that will come in time. I think 2 rail is right for me.
Thanks

Grant, You'll love it in 2-Rail. It's a very good locomotive with more a accurate appearance and operation it will quickly become a favorite!
It definitely got a lot of looks and questions this past weekend at the Great Train Expo when we were operating it on the layout.
