I am new to O scale ( Grew up with HO and built two layouts) I have one of the MTH GEVO Hybrids on order.  It will be my first investment in Power.  When I ordered it I was told 3 rail is way to go. So i ordered it with HIRAIL wheels thinking I was going to use gargraves 3 rail track and be all set. I have since realized that I would much rather model in 2 rail.  Is anyone running this unit on 2 rail?  How does it perform? I am not sure if I can change the order on it or not.  I will just be happy when it arrives. I still have a lot to learn about DCS and command control but thats another post...  Thanks

Don, if you ordered the hirail version you can't operate it on 2-rail track  because the wheel flanges are too deep. You need to change your order to the scale wheel version. If you do that, then it will work on 2-rai. If you want to go to 3-rail, you can run the scale wheels on 3-rail track because you will get the center rail rollers with the loco and the scale wheels will work on anything but tubular 3-rail track.

I am, it performs great, it's my favorite engine so far. The scale wheels version has fixed pilots and scale wheels so it looks way better. Find out if you can switch it for the 2 rail version, you won't regret it in the long run. Also, if you go with the 3 rail version you would have to change the wheel sets on the RPO car if you want to run it on 2 rail track. I did some detailing on the pilot.

I agree that if you wont to run two rail, changing your order is well worth it. It is possible to run the high rail wheels on two rail track,( with the switches set to two rail), If its code 148 track but you wont be able to run it through two rail points. Heres an SD50 from MTH with 2 rail wheels but without fixed pilots, and three rail couplers.       (cTr...Choose the Right)

I have one with scale wheels and did the preliminary testing on 2-rail track. Runs nicely. Right now it has the rollers in and the 2/3-rail switch set to 3-rail for running at the club.

Like Will, I've been ordering all of my new engines with scale wheels and fixed pilots and I'm not looking back. I even tracked down a scale-wheeled UP Heritage unit and plan to sell the hi-rail one I have. They look great and run well. The club's threatening an intervention, though.

I haven't tested the new Proto-3 engines under DCC yet, but I'm looking forward to it. A couple of my two-rail colleagues are having some pretty good laughs about my recent direction.

Yet another interesting thing about the MTH GE Evolution Hybrid is that the locomotive not only has the charging LED lights but truck lights as well!
