I recently purchased an MTH 2-8-8-2 with Proto Sound 2. #20-3054-1 The engine has been behind glass for almost its entire life. Basically no sign of rail wear!! The engine is operating; and smokes, however I have a terrible garbled sound out of the speaker. I tried to charge the battery with track power; and replaced the battery with a temporary Alkaline 9 volt, as the instructions permit, but still get the same garbled sounds. ALSO, the sound is very faint, even after I turn up the volume control. Somewhat audible whistle and bell, also garbled, and the chuff and steam dynamo are practically inaudible. Any ideas? Do I need a new speaker? Volume control? Hope to hear from you guys. And Thanks!      Jeff

Thank you for the detailed message. Looks like I will be on my way to getting the engine fixed. And it sounds by the two replies, that I only have to worry about the speaker. Again, Thanks!

Those original 5 volt speakers were prone to fail over time and yours is more than 10 years old. The symptoms that you're reporting are classic for a 5 volt speaker failure.

MTH has replacements that are much improved and typically do not fail as did the original speakers.

Thanks Chuck. Yes, when I opened up the tender to check the battery, I noticed a weird ozze of something around the speaker area, and I thought there were problems. How do I go about ordering a replacement from you? Do I need a part number, etc.?

Thanks again!

Jeff,  Unfortunately you are not going to find the correct speaker for that engine.  The GN had a narrow tender frame and the 45mm dia and 22mm high 16 ohm speaker BF-0000021.  It is no longer available nor does MTH have one or an equivalent.

The other alternative is a BF-31 also not made.

What I have used is the BF-0000013 which is a 45mm flat 8mm high speaker from a diesel.  Not sure MTH has this either.

Or you are going to need to make a speaker enclosure to raise the speaker into the upper tender shell where there is more room for 50mm speaker.

If you don't want to do this and Chuck doesn't have the speaker you need, I have a BF-13 available.

The gray material you see is actually metal flakes and it gets into the cone coil and prevents proper sound replication.  You want to be sure any particles cleaned up depending on how bad it flaked before installing a new speaker.  G

All the new PS-2/3 speakers are 4 ohm, and this was an odd size with only a few models using it.

Things sound rather dishaetening that MTH can't fulfill repair parts. I will hope for the best with what Chuck is going to do for me, and if things do not work out, I will be contacting you. Thanks for all your explanations, it is also appreciated.

My apoligies to all on this site. I have a computer problem, and taking in the computer Thursday. I may not be able to make many replies. In any event. I did get a speaker from Chuck. Apparently it is the MTH correct version. It has been installed and works fine. I will need to know about future speakers if this one goes hay-wire. Thanks to all. Jeff

I did get the correct replacement as mentioned (and my computer problems). Thanks to all for your help. I will have more questions, once I am back up and running with my computer.  Jeff  Originally Posted by Jeff B. Haertlein:

Chuck:

I got the speaker dropped in yesterday, and it works fine. Since this appears to be a correct replacement, do I have to worry about this speaker failing? If so, I will check on other speakers so I have one in the future. As you may have noted, I am having computer problems, and can't say for sure, when I will be back at our little library to check e-mails, and get onto this site. Thanks again to all.
