MTH J-1 smoke unit question

I have an MTH N&W J Class loco that has a blown board which I believe is a PS3 board from part number 80-3147-1. I did not buy it new and there is no box so I am not absolutely sure if it was PS2 or PS3. At any rate the board is gone and, not being willing to spend 300 bucks or so to replace the board, I am equipping it with an electronic E unit and an inexpensive sound unit. I am thinking about powering the smoke unit from track power. My question is this: Is it ok to power the heating element directly from the track and how much voltage does the fan motor require?

What scale is this locomotive? You're talking about an HO PS/3 board, is this an HO locomotive?

Oops - I just did a product search and this engine came up. It's O gauge and I've always assumed it was PS2 but have no documentation.

The model number you stated is not O gauge. It is HO scale and has PS3. The release year was 2009.

Yes, I now know that. My question remains concerning the smoke unit. The only J1 I could find online was in a set and had PS2. This may be what the engine is.

My question remains concerning the exact model we're talking about! Without knowing that, it's impossible to answer questions about what smoke unit might be in the unit.

The nearest thing listed on the MTH website is a set, 30-4058-1, that is powered by a J Class with PS2 and with the cab number 612 which this engine has. I've also attached a picture of the actual smoke unit.
