MTH LeLand Detroit Monorail

Pretty Scarce Sam. They don't even show up at auctions much either.

Just happens to be one on E-bay tonight.

Hopefully, they will show up in the LCT catalog someday.

I think that it is logical since MTH already has the tooling.

Keep our fingers crossed.

I think it's time to do another run of these. I would like a set as well but they are hard to find; I havn't seen any at the last few Yorks.

The Std Gauge version really has a certain appeal as a speciality set almost like if you did a std Gauge version of the girls freight train.

I met the man who a couple if weeks ago put a set up for sale on eBay. I think a forum member here bought it. He mistakenly put a low "buy it now" price of something around $600. I've seen them sell for triple that amount I don't have one, but if mth does another run I'm definitely in!

There's one on eBay right now, but its missing the track and I believe a few risers and bases (thought it came with more than 8)

There is (or possibly was) an original one on the For Sale board.

It should have 8 curves and 8 straights. This set has only 8 poles and bases and no monorail.

 

I too will be ordering when they re-release.

Another monorail set just went on the Bay with a minimum bid around a thousand. Seems to be complete. I won't be bidding. 

I have an original MTH Leland Monorail. Don't know too much about this product, but it seems to have all the parts and pieces including four cars, one powered, and three dummies. Just wondered if anyone was looking for one. If anyone is knowledgeable about this product please contact me with any information. I do know enough that they go for a good price, so please don't waste my time if you don't have a decent offer.  Thank you!

Do you have the box for it?  There should be an MTH item number.  That will determine if it has protosound 2 or traditional.  Also, there were 2 colors available.  Also, recently on ebay there was a set for sale with missing parts.  These parts are virtually impossible to find.  A buyer would need to make sure all of the tracks and risers/bases are present.

I have no box for it. It is red and creme. the patent date is 1931 i cannot see a mth item number. where excatly would the mth item number be located. if u can inform me of how many pieces of each make a complete set i will let u know.

Jordan: Is your set an MTH set (which is a reproduction) or an original 1930's Leland Detroit set? The fact that there is a power car and 3 trailers suggests an original, as the MTH repros only came with 2 trailers and extras were not available. I believe the originals did have 3 trailers. If you have an original, it could be quite valuable, depending on condition. It would help if you could post a photo. I will be seeing an MTH set in our museum later today and I will check to see where the MTH markings are. Here's a link to the MTH website with info on the repro monorail. The page in the link is the conventional version but it also came with PS/2.

I believe the bases if the risers are stamped with MTH. They are pretty good at making sure their tinplate reproductions can't be mistaken for originals Maybe you have an original from the 30's?

The bases and risers on my set do not have any markings at all. Can't get to the cars right now, but i'll check this weekend. 

That set with the no track and 8 risers/ bases is up for auction again on the bay. Makes me wonder where the track and missing pieces went Ooh I hope MTH has them in this years catalog!

Just checked my monorail, did not see any markings for MTH. However, I do have extra bases and risers, but I'm not ready to part with just yet.

Tim That's the one with missing risers and no track. Basically useless. Avoid bidding!

Someone said the parts are unavailable. It would be good for someone who wants an extra color, upgrade to PS/2, add cars. run 2 at once. The pS-2 is probably a trolley version with stop programming.

 

To those without one already, useless. Unless you plan on buying one.

I can't understand why MTH wouldn't offer more risers and rails . It's beyond me... The monorail is a wonderful and popular item, and I am sure some would surely like to expand it and add on. I realize its unique, but extra track and risers shouldn't be limited like sets are. Sean.

A limited amount of extra track was available at the time the monorails were released. It's long gone, as far as I know. 

I know that, I had picked up straights and risers long ago.... but I see it almost like not selling track. An odd thing to stop making.

Does anyone have a picture of the track close up?  I find it hard to believe that pieces couldn't be kit bashed.  I would think that an outfit like USA Track could make a batch special order.

Has anyone ever checked the MTH booth at York? 

I know that had a lot of extra parts for a bunch of stuff last year.  I bought extra track for my Race Cars there.

There's one  on Ebay now.

The rails are sheet metal folded into a U. Very much like fast track. The brass could be bent on a small metal break.

I did not know until now you can hang this upside down from the ceiling.

Eddie G, that's the one I mentioned that's missing the track. If you read the description, it says: "There is no metal track with this set." This set has been up for auction at least twice before and never fails to draw high bids. Ill wait for MTH to do another run. Hopefully in the catalog this year!

I think that we will be waiting a while for another run. From what I can see, all that MTH is producing right now is Lionel Corporation Tinplate.

Patience is a virtue.

I asked the MTH reps at the Worlds Greatest Train Show in San Diego last month and they said nothing in the works. I mentioned the interest on this forum. Hopefully they will be able to produce more in the future.
