Need some advice - I have several MTH Proto 2 locomotives with dead batteries My interest in trains is waning as I grow older and would like to do something with these locomotives Obviously, one option is to work to replace the batteries myself and sell on ebay Using a nearby hobby shop is not an option Are there any other options ? Thanks for your help !!!

Don't forget the OGR For Sale forum. No ebay fees to pay.
As I’ve resurrected my proto 2 engines, I just automatically replace the battery with a BCR. I also inspect the speakers. If they are showing signs of flaking, Replace !!! Free roaming flake pieces can fry the electronics. No rhyme or reason to which engine will flake. Not always needed. I’ve had to replace 2. Replacing Traction tires are optional.
Cheers 😉

And no state tax charged, like eBay.
Selling them here on the for sale section "as is, needing a battery/speaker" would be another option. The fellows here understand what that involves, versus the random people on Ebay without the proper train knowledge.
If you changed the battery, inspect the speaker, tested etc. You could sell them for more (take pictures/video while testing) but requires more work and sourcing the batterys/bcrs and correct size/ohm speakers. I would try here first, good luck!
Have the batteries really gone bad, or are they just dead from disuse and need re-charging? If they will recharge, you're OK. BCR's may be "better", but they aren't necessary.
Do you have an MTH Proto-Sound 2.0 Battery Charger, Part No. 50-1019? If not, might try to find one. Works for me when MTH locos have been put away in boxes too long.
What, me worry?
Anything is possible. My 20 y/o batteries were DEAD 🫣🫢😳😳
Go to Harbor freight and buy some 9 volt (really 8.2v, 7 cell, Nickel metal hydride) batteries and install. cheaper than a BCR.
