I have a MTH RS-3 LocoSound 30-2200-0. In forward it jackrabbits and stops and starts also no speed control. In reverse runs smoothly and with speed control. Horn and bell work and diesel sounds. Yes lights work forward and reverse. Is this something with the boards or is it something with the optical sensor? Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you remove the shell and observe the flywheel to optical-sensor alignment as it runs in fwd vs. rev?
When I touched the wires on the optical sensor the gray one came off. I resoldered it. Now it runs in forward but locked in forward. I also measured the distance from the flywheel to the optical sensor and it is .040 in or 1.02 mm. The optical sensor is secure in it's holder.
Wonder if engine somehow got locked into forward. Did you try to Unlock the direction?
Also, if/when you restore the direction, if you find the engine runs faster than what you remember (for the same throttle setting) it's possible the Speed Control was turned Off. Use the above button code to toggle that feature - Speed Control is generally accepted as a benefit.

Stan,
Thanks I did what you suggested. Now we are back to in forward it jackrabbits and stops and starts also no speed control. In reverse runs smoothly and with speed control. So is the optical sensor bad or is the boards failing.
Thanks

When it was locked in fwd, you say "it runs". Does this mean it was running under speed control?
When you say, "it jackrabbits and stops and starts also no speed control" please elaborate a bit. Does this mean at a fixed throttle it hiccups down the track stopping and starting and stopping and starting by itself. And while I think I know what you mean by jackrabbiting, please describe more precisely.
And, to be clear, I realize you measured the distance from sensor to flywheel and that the sensor is securely mounting. Just want to confirm the sensor is centered on the flywheel...aiming at the middle of the stripe in both the forward and reverse directions.
Stan,
The sensor was aiming on the high side on the tape. I press it down in the holder and it seated a little closer to center of the flywheel and the tape. It now runs smoothly in forward and with speed control. Thanks so much for your help.
