i just wanted to quickly share my good experience with the latest MTH Premier Niagara and matching five car set.

The engine is loaded with nice added details such as dual headlights, tiny "American Locomotive Company" plate, piping, tiny hinged engineer wind defecter, curtains and neat chunky coal load. The combined appearance of engine and massive tender is striking- see attached photo. A must for NYC fans.

The cars are a vast improvement over the initial release over fifteen years ago. Too many  detail improvements to mention. MTH finally got the lighting just right, eliminating the need for LEDs. Subtle. Engine and five cars draw only 2 amps without smoke. Only thing needed is possibly repainting the interior in a better color. Don't know if the lighted drumhead logo "New York Central System" is correct, but it looks neat.

After oiling and priming with smoke fluid, the engine was entered into my remote and started up perfectly. I then checked all all the soft key functions. Then I chose the most popular ones and easily organized them so that they are better displayed on the remote.

Engine has the expected smooth slow speed operation. Neat firebox glow shines on the tender in the dark. Looks real cool even if it is not prototical. Chuff sounds are a little subdued, but pleasing, especially after running a while.  I like to play the different announcements which are clear and loud- see attached videos.

Only regret is that I could have ordered the engine and four car set.

Thank you.  Nice review.  You have a really nice looking layout, too.

Your thread cost me a lot of money.  I love Northerns, whether called Niagaras or anything else, but had told myself to sit this one out.  But after this review I had to have one.  I just order the set with the reefers from Pats Trains: the passenger cars are nice, but I got enough passenger trains.

Again, nice train and really nice looking layout.

Actually, that "diesel horn" is more correct for the New York Central Niagara locomotive in the later years. Once the NYC completed tests on the Niagaras and discovered how much steam was waisted with that whistle, the steam whistles were removed and the Engineer was left with only that air horn to blow.

Another sale thanks to "influence" of the Forum.

Thank you for the review.

I agree completely.  Northerns are just particularly attractive.  The Niagara is one of the handsomest of them, too, and MTH's modeling detail has been tremendous lately.  I can't wait to get mine: UPS says Tuesday!

Might favorite locomotive, periodl, is the ATSF Northern 3765/2900s: the Santa Fe slanted-front cab shape, and their size, makes them particularly good looking. But this Niagara is right up there close.

Thanks for the great review. Really sweet double deck layout!! Awesome!

I would have bought this locomotive in a heartbeat of MTH had offered it in 2 rail. My own very, very small critique is that it has the same whistle as two of my other MTH steam locomotives. I still would have been happy with it overall. It's a really nice locomotive.
