My engines are primarily MTH, but i recently received a Lionel Freedom train engine with Legacy system. I ordered this because i have the MTH Freedom train passenger set and could not find an MTH Freedom train engine, BUT, now i see that MTH is coming out with a Freedom Train engine in their new catalog. My dilemma is should i sell the Lionel and  buy the MTH version. I currently only have the one  Lionel Freedom train engine, but I am also looking at the New Lionel E8 AA Louisville & Nashville set.. it would be my luck to buy the Lionel E8 L&N, and  then in six months MTH would come out with the same things...

I currently don't have a command control system, but i am sure i will start with the MTH DCS, i just didn't want to have to buy the  Lionel Legacy system also.

Your thoughts, suggestions would be  appreciated.

Thanks good thought on the color match.  I put the MTH passenger car and the Lionel Freedom train engine next to each other and i don't see an appreciable difference in the color.  It does appear after looking at them in different light and shadows that the Lionel MAY BE a little darker, but i have to say that if you had not mentioned it, i would not have thought there may be a difference.. Again to my eye looks to be no problem. Now back to the MTH vs the Lionel engines, and systems.

Regards,

Sounds like the color is close enough. Sometimes it works out.  I have a set of Williams NP cars that have varying color in a dramatic way.  Will be selling those soon with the Alco PA NP Williams.

Hi, Walter and Jim.  Both basically said to keep the Lionel and wait for the MTH version.  The MTH version is now shown in the newest MTH catalog.  So now what... don't bother with the MTH version and keep the Lionel or buy the MTH version and sell the Lionel, or buy both systems. I am looking for sage advise from group that may have both systems and regret it, or is satisfied living with both systems.

Based on MTH's past delivery schedule history, I'd keep what I have until the item you order arrives.

I personal have both MTH DCS and Lionel Legacy on my home layout. Our club, Golden Gate Lionel Railroad Club, in the San Jose/San Francisco Bay Area, is set up with both systems. There are no issues operating either Legacy/TMCC or DCS at the same time.

I originally built my home layout with MTH for several reasons, no need to get into it at this time. Quickly added Legacy and haven't looked back at all. However, I have converted some of my MTH engines, PS1 and PS2, to TMCC using Electric Railroad Cruise Commander and RailSounds.

Have also upgraded my Williams and KLine engines as well. For me, I prefer the Lionel remote over the MTH. I still have several MTH engines with PS2 and use the MTH remote on my home layout. Have yet to invest in wifi, all though my club has installed wifi so I can run my trains with my Iphone.

I would keep the Lionel Freedom engine, I have this one as well. Someday you may purchase other Lionel equipment that is not available from MTH.

Good luck,

RAY

I have both systems and enjoy them both. I am not a one manufacturer only type of person. I chose to invest at the time TMCC came out then upgraded to Legacy and at the same time purchased DCS. Happy with both and my decision to have them both to utilize ALL the features available to me by Lionel and MTH.

Plus now I have MTH WiFI and purchased the beginning of Legacy Wireless. This is a great hobby despite some of the BS that goes along with upgrading a TIU, WIU or a remote.
