I ordered this model on ebay a few weeks ago. Today I'm going to give it a run and see what it's all about. I got a fully charged EBL battery ready to go for it.

Just advising, don't get to attached to because it has a 5v board in it. It will likely blow at some point when you are running it. Common problem.
Good for you, ignore Sid's rainmaking and enjoy the locomotive.
I will. I'm excited to get it running. I already want the other road number. Lol.

I was just letting him know. I have the same loco and after two hours of running it blew up in a cloud of smoke.

I have a spare 3v board if I need it. I just have to make sure i can get the sound file for it.

That's good. Didn't want to down you or anything. Hope you enjoy the engine.

Yes, I'm running the RK 60 footers. I think they look good with the E 6 and they have lighted full interiors and diaphragms. I'd like to run bigger cars, but I'm limited on my table layout to 0-36 curves.

I had the same problem with a 5v engine and luckily I found a guy here on the Forum who fixed it. Seems like the problem is that some of the early PS2 engines have a poor quality main board capacitors that blow with lots of smoke and need to be replaced with a better quality ones. If the board is bad, it won't work, but, if it's just the cap, you may be in luck.
I just got the same Atlantic at Allentown a few weeks ago. I fried the 5V board already, BUT IT WAS 100% MY FAULT
If and when that time comes, here are my threads that these kind forum folks helped me change out to the 3V board and get the right sound file and tac tape.
Oh by the way... If you think it sounds good now... Just wait until you get the Upgrade file for the 30-3038-1 here. https://mthtrains.com/20-3038-1 Lou1985 recommended these. Way better than the original.

Cool to see it with a different tender than the normal Atlantic style.

Yes I do like that a lot!
Looks like your Tender is riding high a little in the back. Or is it just the picture?
Whoever had mine before me, put the metal steps between the frame and shell. They go on the outside of the frame and then it's nice and level.
Looks Good!

I think it is riding high. I put the steps between the frame and shell. I think that's how is was when it come out of the box. I'll try and move them the other way and see if that moves a difference.
Outside the frame. Do you need a pic?

Wouldn't hurt. Post it please.

I made a mistake in my previous post. This engine had 2 minutes on it not 2 hours!! This is pretty much brand new.

Lots of Atlantic sound files, no problem if you replace the board. Many of the 5V boards will run a long time, others will bite the dust in short order, luck of the draw.
Several variations of internal configurations on the atlantics so becarefyul when doing a repair. Hopefully yours will last fine. G

Hopefully it will.
I always used the 8.4 volt (7-cell) battery as came originally in early MTH engines and they are the ones recommended for replacement. The 9 volt batteries are only 6-cell.
I quit using batteries years ago in favor of BCRs.

I wouldn't put a BCR in a 5v engine like this. I threw the EBL in there as recommended by @gunrunnerjohn

Actually, it's very difficult to buy a 6-cell rechargeable "9v" battery nowadays, they're virtually all 7-cell.
So EBL is a brand name of a rechargeable battery?
Here's the ones I use.

GRJ is this what you put in the PS1 locomotives? As opposed to your own BCR replacments?
gunrunnerjohn posted:Here's the ones I use.
I use these unless the customer wants a supercap replacement. For 5V PS/2, I am sticking with batteries for the most part, I'm a little reluctant to put the charging circuit through the rigors of the surge current of a supercap.
I was looking on this model to turn the smoke off in conventional mode. The switch is empty in the engine. There is no switch on the tender.

I have this engine, too. Bought it at York about 10 years ago. Replaced the original battery with a BCR and it's still running fine.
I have four 5V MTH engines. Have heard lots of bad stuff about 5v engines, but all my engines have BCRs and run fine. Maybe I'm lucky...

Does replacing the battery in a 5v board make the board have a better chance for lasting?
You certainly don't want to leave a bad battery in any PS/2 locomotive.

Doesn't the smoke "POT" under the water hatch turn it off if its turned all the way down?

No pot under the water hatch on this. It was made before the opening hatches and smoke pots were a thing.
