What's the catalog number of the locomotive? Which small board, there are several in most of MTH's locomotives. What is it plugged into? Have you looked at the exploded diagram in MTH's site and seen what it's listed as?

Mt 5501lp is whats on the box. Its probably 20-5501 Proto 1.
I was able to look at parts on the MTH website but now I cant. I can only see the manual.
I agree it is probably a 20-5501 which i believe it to be a proto 1 or protosound, PC board there are no other boards in the engine that I'm aware of, Why is your board bad . It should have a nine volt battery if it is a proto one, and if your battery is dead or weak could be the reason if the engine will not work! What are your symptoms, with the engine?

It has proto 1 sound that has a top and bottom board on the other end there is a small board, what is that board for?
Constant voltage regulator board for lighting etc.
