Hi - Long time lurker first time poster. I just bought an mth proto 1 train master cab#2341 Item #20-2201-1 knowing that the green marker lamps did not work. I checked mth parts and they do not carry them anymore. The parts list said they are 6 volt leds. I checked the connection where the leds get power from with a multi meter. When set to ac the reading was 12.8v When set on dc it was 6.2 volts,so I assume it outputs dc voltage because the original leds were 6v? When I search for leds online I can only find leds that are 2-3 dc volts or 12-18 ac/dc volts. Would either of those work and if not can someone tell me what leds I could use to get the marker lights working again. Also does 2mm sound like the right size for this engine. Thanks in advance

The LED's are not really 6V, the green ones drop around 2.5-2.6 volts, and I believe those are in series.  The power you're seeing is current limited for the LED's or it would cook them.

The LED's in question are usually the Lumex 2mm ceramic LED's, they're white ceramic bodies with a tiny colored lens on the front.  This is a red one, they come red, yellow, and green.  However, they've been obsolete for several years and are hard to find nowadays.

I just bought a dozen of those from surplusgizmos.com. Arrived yesterday.

They actually are packed in Digikey packages with DK part numbers. I searched DK using those part numbers, and they're no longer sold there.

And as GRJ mentioned, those marker LEDs need to be in series. Thats why you're seeing the port output 6V even though they're only 2V leds.

You won't need a resistor either, since it's built into the output on the PS1 board.

Thank you guys for all of the good info. I ordered the lumex red leds from surplusgizmos. Now I will need to tie the positive side on both leds together and also tie the neg sides on both leds together and have the positive go to the red and the neg go to the black on the connection I have pictured right? Thank you again

Also @66Ruffo: I hope you've been saved.  (You'll see what I mean when you get the shipment from Surplisgizmos.  Took me aback for a moment! )

Definitely string them together positive-to-negative when you do it.  They are super tiny, and you will absolutely need heat-shrink tube that is just small enough to slide over your solder connection and the leads, or the leads will short against each other.

A "trick" on using the 2mm ceramic LED's.  One issue is you have to keep the total size of the insulated leads smaller than the 2mm ceramic head of the LED for many of the places they go.

I use the insulation from #30 Kynar wire to slip over one lead, then use my smallest heatshrink over both leads, that results in the smallest diameter splice.  I also use really tiny #28 or #30 wire to connect to them as well.
