MTH PS 2 Norfolk Southern Battery questions

I recently purchased an MTH PS 2 Norfolk Southern F7 ABA from 2007. These have powered and slave unit set up. Is there a battery in both of the A units or just the main powered unit? Trying to figure it I need to swap out both before opening the shells. Any issue using a BCR in a slave unit set up?

slave doesn't have a battery. Only the lead unit does.

2.4V Battery or the 5V BCR. No issue. As stated slave has no battery. Does what lead unit tells it to do. G
