Good evening, I just recently installed a BCR in a MTH WM Alco S-2 with a 3V ps2 board.
Everything works - smoke, couplers, speed control, except there is no sound. I've tried performing a factory reset with my DCS remote as well as verifying the sound pot is turned all the way up. Still no sound.
Is there a component that can somtimes go bad on the 3V ps2 board?

Yes the audio amp, but speaker and wiring can be an issue too. Did this work before you swapped in a BCR? G

Yes, I did actually have very faint sound with the battery installed. I thought maybe the faint sound was due to the battery needing replaced, however after replacing the batery, I now have no sound, lol.
I would check speaker for open. Measuring through the connector on the PS-2 board (yel/wht wires in 12 pin also test the harness too). G
Appears the speaker is still good, I measured the ohms through the connector, I received 7.8 ohms which is about the value of the 8Ω speaker.
I'm guessing the audio amplifier went bad, is this something that can be replaced on the 3volt board?

Yes. But a PS-2 3V speaker should be 4 ohms. I can test your board and if the audio amp bad replace it, but I would test it with a 4 ohm speaker first. G
Well, after rummaging through my parts box, I found a 4 Ω speaker. I swapped out the 8Ω spearker with the 4 Ω, and powered up the locomotive...still no luck.
My last hope was to try swapping out the BCR2's,. When I ordered my BCR2, I ordred a spare with it. Much to my suprise, after swapping the capacitors, the sound started working! So I'm wondering what is wrong with the first BCR2 I installed? Like I mentioned before, I had all funtionality except the sound.
Anyone have available replacement 4Ω speakers for the MTH Alco S-2? For whatever reason,the previous owner of the engine decided to swap the 4Ω speaker for a 8Ω speaker.

I measured speaker, the dimensions are 1 9/16" x 1 1/8". Should be the standard size for an MTH Alco S-2 speaker.

Would the 8ohm speaker work? Would it halve the volume?

It probably would, just not as loud Im guessing. But as GGG mentioned before, the speaker should be 4 Ω's.
Picture?? Is this a round speaker or the rectangular one with plastic base? G
