I recently received the newest run of the MTH R40 set (20-21143-1) and the 2-car pack (20-21143-3). Upon recieving it I noticed that the 4-pack came with 2 short couplers, the coupler resistor plug, and traction tires. None of the other Styrofoam boxes have short couplers (the 2-car expansion pack didn't come with any), how many should be included in each of the Styrofoam boxes?

I recall there were two of the MTH DD4000005 34.3mm Short Couplers in each styrofoam tray on my sets which was enough to replace the couplers on the blind (inside undecorated) ends. There are two ProtoCouplers and six regular couplers on the four car set, plus four more regular couplers since you also have the two car add-on.

You will also need to install a MTH AI0000062 Resistor/Rear Coupler if you replace the rear ProtoCoupler on the powered car. I left the ProtoCoupler installed on my set so I can uncouple my power car via DCS. I also left the regular coupler installed on the rear of the tail car since that does not impact car spacing. That leaves a total of nine short couplers to convert my R40 sets. I did need to purchase a few extras from MTH Parts & Sales.
