I was looking online and I came across a MTH NYCTA R42 "E" train set. It was a really good deal except he said the front motor is not working. After contacting the seller he said to me the following "The circuit board that powers the motors is fried. The lights come on, but that's it. You would need to put in a new "E-Unit" from a third-party vendor, or possibly an aftermarket Protosound 2 unit from MTH. I'm sure the motors themselves work; the electronics that power them don't work. There is no sound." How big of a job and how money is envoled to restore this train? I am sure I can get all 4 cars for a good price, but if it will cost me more than what the train is worth new without any problems I may just pass on the set.

So offer him $50.  It is not a post war Lionel and since it has toasted boards and is a conventional engine, he can't expect to get top $$.  All he can say is no.  Either way it does become a project.  I would say you should stay away from it though.  Started out with bad motor (one) and then went to toasted board.  So it could have both wrong.  Hence why it is only really worth salvage $$.  G
