What years were the Merger Era?

When I looked this up on Wikipedia most of the major mergers started in the 1980's.  The mergers are a long and tangled web, but that's about when the major mergers started. But, there were mergers before then.  So, I would say pre-1980, however, in my mind it's pre-1970's.

hello guys and gals..........

I have one modern orange and black  MTH tanker without the frame and the build data printed on the sides says "5-55"  "Hooker chemicals".   The MTH stock # 20-96187 there is clear picture of that in the MTH web site.  Gilly of N&W would be correct about the time period of those cars.

Companies like ACF built similar tank car like the MTH modern tank car built from the early 1960's to the early 1970's but they had a frame or support beams between the two end platforms. It is close to the 1960's car. This tank car is used as an overall model to cover a large time period. You could figure out a way to add the rest of the frame back to make it look older.

In my neck of the woods "Merger Day" means March 2, 1970.

The O Scale Freight Car Guide to Tank Cars says:

"The pattern for the modern tank car was set by the Union Tank Car “Hot Dog” design of 1954. The Union HD design used all welded, domeless tank construction along with stub sills. With stub sill construction the tank itself transmits the pulling or pushing forces of the train while the short underframes at each end of the car transfer the weight of the tank to the trucks and hold the draft gear. This construction method saves weight that can be used to haul additional product. Stub sill cars have been the most common type of tank car constructed since the 1960s and their wide acceptance coincided with the advent of 100 ton (263,000 pound gross weight) freight cars."

That's great, Ted.  What happened on March 2, 1970?  My neck of the woods is the same as yours. Was it the BN merger?  As I stated above, 1970 is what in my mind is the beginning of the merger era.

The link at the bottom of your post is a great resource for O gauge tank car models.
