I purchased one of these from the local hobby shop that I had had on a pre-order. Delivery was a month or so ago, I picked it up as soon as it came in but was unable to test it out due to some reconstruction on the main line. I finished that project up two days before Christmas and was ready to try it and several other items in waiting on Christmas day. I was surprised to see being evaluated in the copy of that other magazine that I received in the mail on Christmas Eve. Not surprised after reading that my experience was the same with the sound system and there were other problems. First off it was obvious that it had been out of the box and there was no manual present. Second, my sound system had a similar glitch. When start-up is initiated, the idle sounds started up as they should, but when the engine began to move the running (chuffing) sounds were overpowered by the idle sounds. My other complaint is that it would not run through my atlas switches (number 5 or 0-72) or through my curved ross switches. Runs through ross #4 okay, but this makes this engine useless to me. Not surprising as the engine only has two pick-ups closely spaced on the engine. One other issue that may be a problem to others is that this engine has a huge spacing between the engine and tender. Guess I'll start with the dealer and see what he says and follow up with MTH if I have to.

Checked with dealer, he referred me to MTH, they said too bad they don't test every engine on every switch or track, so I asked about putting a third pick-up on the tender since it appeared to be capable of accepting one and they said I might be able to but would have to figure out which one! Guess I will put this in the pile of items for sale at train show and bite the bullet. This is obviously a design flaw as the rollers visibly do not span the gap when crossing the switches. I would think that they have been in business long enough to anticipate their customers would be using two of the most popular track systems on the market and design accordingly.
