I'm having difficulty with a Railking 30-2909-1 PS2 3V diesel engine I just brought home from York.  Apply track power via DCS TIU and lionel brick.  Green marker/running lights turn on, then turn off immediately.  18V still on track, but there is a relay click inside the engine either right when the lights turn on or off...

I assume this means something in the charging circuit is non-functional, at a minimum.  Took out the BCR/blue 2.4V "battery" and its got 2.2V on it and there is a sticker that indicates it was replaced in 2021.

Can't add engine - engine not found - I assume because something inside the engine has shut it down.

I have not changed the smoke pot from where it was set, so it could be off for all I know.

I have not changed the volume up from where it was set, so it could be off for all I know.

Those two items were planned to be checked next.  Was going to replace the BCR/battery but figured I'd throw this out there first.

Thanks, Dave

PS2 engines are polarity sensitive on the DCS signal from the TIU or other DCS source.

There is normally a relay click on PS2 when first powered. And getting the MTH wachdog- yes, even in reverse polarity- the engine might stay silent and off waiting for a valid DCS startup signal it never gets because you cannot complete add engine process with reverse polarity.

#1 attempt conventional operation using NO DCS signal and either the variable channel of your TIU with DCS signal disabled or just a separate variable test track and transformer.

#2 check your wiring between TIU and track for polarity. Red post to center rail, black post to outer rails. PS3 engines don't care about polarity but PS2 does matter!!

Thanks for the guidance.  I have some things to try out tomorrow.  DCS is working fine for all the other engines, so I don't think its a polarity thing.  Red is center rail, black is outside.  I've broken out my old ZW and a sound activation button.  Now have a setup where I can try pure conventional on its own track.  I've already tested with an old railking engine and I can get the horn with the ZW whistle lever and the bell with the sound activation button...

I haven't upgraded to 6.1 yet.  Still at 5.0.  I'm leery about messing with any "upgrades" to DCS as it works and heaven knows if something gets messed up it would cost me a fortune to get a backup....  So once I finish some painting chores for the wife tomorrow, I will try the conventional feature and factory resets.  Hopefully that works and then when I swap back to DCS track it can find the engine and I can add it.

So I started it up in conventional.  Everything runs.  Sounds.  Smoke.  Forward.  Reverse.  Lights.  Horn.  Bell.  Crew talk.  But I've tried like 10 times to put it in neutral, sounds the horn, then bell on/off/on/off/on and get no reset two horn blast.  I've tried not waiting for the bell and rapidly pushing 5x.  I've tried hitting the horn (but get no sound) then 5 rapid bell presses.  Nothing.  I'm thinking my ZW and horn combination, while working, just isn't putting the right signal on the track or I'm doing it too slow or too fast....suggestions?  I do know that my whistle/horn lever on the ZW is a little suspect and I can't tell its registering unless i hear the horn.  I can probably take it to my it to my LHS and maybe they will let me borrow their MTH Z with built-in horn/bell?

And H1000 - 100% agree...I fretted over testing....but the guy was adamant it worked....and I guess he was correct.  Seems to be working great in conventional.  Hopefully I can get it to be recognized and reset.  I don't think I saw a DCS setup at the test tracks at York....but I really wasn't looking too hard.  I'm guessing all I need is the reset and it will be fine...just need to find a PS that can do it...

SUCCESS!!!  After typing this I decided to swap to the left side of the ZW, as I always have used the right throttle and right whistle...maybe the left side is less worn and would take the whistle/horn with more reliability...after about 5 more times I got the two horn reset!!!  The odd thing is, when I moved it over to the DCS track, I still got "no engine found"....but I decided to try the "recover engine" feature and it worked!!! said "engine recovered".  I think went to add engine and it put it in an open slot and everything works!!!!  Thanks for all the guidance...

Now I'm wondering if I actually tried the "recover" engine the first time....or if I saw the 6.1 upgrade and decided to not even try it on 5.0....
