Since you all were very helpful in helping me fix my K-Line VRE FP59PHi, I figured I would try another one. This time I have an early generation Railking GS-4 with Protosound 1 / QSI boards that I bought new when it first came out. This engine ran without issue until just recently when it just stopped dead, and lost sound. I have had a BCR in it almost since those hit the market. When I power it up, I get the two bells, and no sound. On shutdown, I get the single bell. I also do not get any movement. Headlight works. I have used my Z4000 to perform a "reset 18" numerous times, as well as inserted the reset sound chip with no success. What are my options to resolve this?

I have that loco as well...been a little troublesome over the years. I bought it new in October 1997.
One thing I did was dump the BCR in favor of a MTH Green battery.
Another thing I did when I got no sounds at all, not even the bell, but it did run (started in reverse rather than forward), was to put a sound chip from another PS engine that I knew worked. It seemed to reset the engine. Then I put the Daylight chip back-in.
Not an expert...just sharing what's worked for me.
Good luck.
Ron,
Thanks for the feedback. I actually replaced the BCR last night with another one (just in case it had gone bad), with no change in results. I was thinking one of the next steps may be to try with an actual battery. So thanks for that input.
I was also thinking of trying another PS1 tender from that era to make sure I am not fighting multiple issues, like a bad motor and a bad sound board. Does seem odd that both would have failed at the same instant in time.
Worth trying the sound chip from another as well.
Cheers,
Kurt
Need the product #. Are you powering up on a track with other engines on it? What voltage are you setting?
Where in VA are you. Look at my profile.
bruce
Bruce,
Product number is 30-1119-1, per picture below. Engine is currently on its own RealTrax 30" test track direct connected to an independent channel on a Z4000 for diagnosis. Engine is sitting on some roller wheels per picture.
You should be able to see my location in my profile. If not, then I must have something set incorrectly; let me know.
Cheers,
Kurt

Your profile is state only. Engine should be powered with about 10-12 volts and be in neutral, not reset for the reset to successfully be applied.
bruce
Bruce,
Since the engine does not move, as in no power to the motor, how do I tell if it has moved from reset to neutral? Also, I thought the Z4000 took care of all that when using the program mode to reset it.
I just tried the engine with a Protosound 1 tender from a MTH RK UP 49er, and the motor works. So the problem(s) are all in the GS4 tender, and include the sound board and maybe also the DCRU.
I also fixed my profile.
The daylight chip can get a ID conflict that causes symptoms you see. First, try to do a reset 18, but if the engine never gets beyond state 1 1 ding, there is an ID conflict.
The MTH Reset chip is for only one symptom which is the 3 CLANKS. Do not use it for every problem you run into, you can do more software harm, then good.
The engine needs to be reset with special chip to clear the ID issue. G
G,
Thanks for the insight. When I do the reset 18, I do not get any "chooses", "clinks" or "clangs". I get the initial 2 bells, then the 18 power cycles, then nothing. I press the "select" to lock it in, nothing. Press "select" again; nothing.
I followed the procedures from here: http://service.trainz.com/perf...nds-reset/index.html
I have been emailing Bruce Benzie who has offered to have a look at it since he is relatively close.
Sounds like ID conflict that needs to be reset with tech chip. G
I dropped it off at Bruce Benzie's house Sunday for repair. Thanks for everyone's help and insights. See you all at York!
