The way this operates is that the LED's blink in pairs of two. The left pair(front & back) on the cantilever blinks with the left pair on the mast. the right pairs do the same, so that they alternate just like the real signal. The flasher is a 555 circuit , and if my memory serves me today, there should be three wires that go up the mast to the leds. This should be easily adapted to an external crossing signal flasher (either home brewed or commercially obtained). I know that Dallee makes one, and that the flasher circuit diagram is easily found--- just Google "555 flasher circuit" and there will be hundreds(maybe more) hits.
