I'm considering purchasing a set of these in the blue and yellow freight colors. How do they compare to the real thing? If anyone has a set, how do you like them? I don't know the MTH number, but am curious if they ever produced them with the red striping?

I did a little review a while back.

Yes they did, here is a link: http://mthtrains.com/20-2565-1
Found the pn. 20-20162-1. Looks like it doesn't have the red stripe.
I'm trying to decide if I want the FT's or the new F7's. The FT's seem to be the better value with 2 powered units. I have the proto-1 F3 freight's, but think I'd like another set.
Thanks for posting the link Marker. Read through the entire thread. Very nice comparision.

Sure looks like they have that short lived red "outline stripe" to me. At least that link to the cataloge photo shows the red stripe.

brr - If you are a Santa Fe modeler and model the steam transition era, the cat whisker paint scheme is correct. About the time Santa Fe abandoned steam, they changed the paint scheme.
The Red stripes lasted through the 40's, although Santa Fe shortened the stripe when the FT's needed repainting in the late 40's. By 1953 the paint scheme was the Cigar Band scheme which is on 20-20162-1.
Most people go by the paint scheme they like, I try to stay in the Steam Transition era, before steam ended.
From what I've read, Hot Water seems to favor the later diesel era scheme.
Unless I'm missing something in the pictures, the 20-20162-1 doesn't have the red accent stripe.
I would prefer an engine from the 40's, but will accept one from the 50's. No later than the mid-50's. Would like to have it pulling map reefers/boxcars, steel or wood. Anything later will post-date my upper level short line. I don't know my Santa Fe paint scheme time-line, which is why I'm posting the above questions, and hoping for advice. I'm just now starting to get era-specific on my little layout.

Click on Santa Fe F units and click on The FT's.
You are not missing anything 20-20162-1 does not have red stripes. It is the later paint scheme 1953 on. It is known as the Cigar Band scheme. Read the info listed above. Everything you would want to know can be found there.
