I'm planning to build a new layout and am considering the use of MTH's ScaleTrax track.

1)  I need to add a roadbed, correct?  What are some suggestions for economy, realism, and economy?  Also, I would prefer something that is not too labor intensive.

2)  Will I be able to run my early 1950's vintage engines and rolling stock well on this track?  Any problems?

3)  Are the switches strong and reliable?

Thanks for any advice

1. SInce the track and ties are so low, I would use some sort of roadbed. I use scenic express foam roadbed and love it. 11.99 for 24ft...

If you are buying scaletrax and switches, justrains is the cheapest and when you make a large order all at once( $250 or $300) shipping becomes free!

If you are nailing the track down, pre-drill holes in your scaletrax ties. Probably should pre-drill holes even if you screw the track down to prevent the ties from cracking.

2. I don't see why not any ogauge train wouldn't run on it.

3. I like their switches. A few have had some problems. They are much better than the gargraves I have used in the past, almost as good a ross, but much cheaper!

Feel free to e-mail me with any scaletrax questions...although I am new to it, there is a fast learning curve.

I used cork roadbed. It was difficult at first learning how to shape the curves but after a while you get the hang of it. I definitely recommend purchasing Rich Battista's videos " The Black Diamond Railway. He presents step by step how to work with Scaletrax. Once you view them you will have a better understanding of this track system.

LOVE ScaleTrax !!!

Just wish MTH could make a better selection of switches. I was told by one of them at a show that as soon as Cash Flow improves they are on the list.

In the meantime I'm subbing with RCS O-72 wye's and have nothing bad to say about them. Just leave the roadbed out from under the RCS switch and you are close in height. I don't expect I'll take them out. I love those hand spiked real wood ties.

Another Recommendation for the Rich Battista videos. I love them.

I am using the Scenic Express foam roadbed as well. It lays fast, it's flexible enough for wider curves and can be slitted and pie wedged for tighter curves.

I know it involves some extra cost, but seeing is so much better than use trying to explain.

I would get both DVD for $24.95 plus $5 shipping. It is worth it.

When you get to ballast, I went with Ballastkings ballast.  Since scaletrax ties not deep like ross, gargraves, or atlas track, the ballast goes a long way. I think 20lbs of ballast cost about $50 and that includes shipping! 20lbs of ballast will cover about 140ft+ of track. Here is the website and some pics of my first attempt at scaletrax, roadbed and ballast...
