The MTH 2011 Volume I catalog shows 20-3436-1 SF Blue Goose Passenger set with engine, tender and FIVE (5) passenger cars. Received my set today and all it came with are engine, tender and FOUR (4) cars.

Did I miss a catalog correction? Has anyone else received their set yet?

Thanks, Joe

Received my set on Tuesday 7/31/12. Mine is the same as yours. I called the dealer that I purchased the set thru and he verified with MTH, it is correct. MTH said that the catalog was wrong and the SF Blue Goose should have been shown exactly like the Hiawatha set. Loco, tender and 4 passenger cars. Forgot to mention that this set is absolutely beautiful.

My dealer (Catoctin Mountain Trains) mentioned that to me as well earlier this week. He mentioned a few disappointed customers (and Paul, the store owner, himself wasn't happy) and the likelihood he would cancel the rest of his order.

What really irked him was it was shown online and in the catalog with 5 cars.

Send it back?  c'mon.....are you serious?

I agree with Dave,

I think it's a fantastic deal.If I didn't already have three "Blue Geese" 4-6-4's I'd jump at the PS-3 version.

Ricky!

I received mine this past Thursday...BEAUTIFUL set.  I was concerned there were only 4 passenger cars instead of the 5 as shown on the website, however, I have asked my MTH dealer if he can order another set of just the passenger cars for a total of 8 cars.  I am waiting to hear if he can order just the additional cars.  Can't wait to run this set when I get my layout finished.

Thanks!

David

The purpose of my posting is in the title. It was answered by Steve!

I did not ask if it was still a good deal or a fantastic deal..

It wasn't necessary for  someone to criticize a comment that SJC made about some people returning or canceling their order since the catalog photo does not match the actual release. I don't think that the complaints are unjustified. If one is not an MTH club member or missed a catalog correction, I can understand why one would be upset. Obviously some dealers were not up to speed on the change or simply did not contact those who preordered to inform them of the change.

The 5-car sets being seen for sale are both the original release sets, from the 2002 Vol.1 catalog and the newer 2011 Volume 1 catalog offerings.  Mostly the newer releases.

In addition to the 5-car set, there was a 2-car and add-on full length dome car also produced in the 2002 issue.  The 2011 offers were the same, however an RPO car and an additional 2-car set were also produced.

All of the car sets came with different car numbers/names.  I don't know the names of the cars in the boxed set, but assume that they too are different.

Note:  If someone who has the new boxed set could send me a note on what car numbers/names are used, I'd appreciate the info.

The original cars from 2002 were produced in very low numbers, far less than the number of engines.  Probably due to the "fantasy" nature of the cars and purists rejecting them.  They  have been very highly priced on the secondary market, up until now.  But, with the introduction of the newer sets, the interest to have these two-tone decorated cars has seemingly been fulfilled.  The original issue cars have come down in price, but are still a unique set of cars due to their numbers/names.

In theory, an operator could have their Blue Goose hudson pull over 20 of these cars.  That would make for one beautiful and long train.

The newest Blue Goose " boxed set" with locomotive and 4 cars delivered in 2012 ships in an outer shipping carton labeled 20-3436-1.  Inside the shipping carton are 3 purple MTH boxes labeled as follows:

  • 20-3436-1E:  The Blue Goose Hudson steam locomotive, numbered 3460.
  • 20-3436B:  2-pack with Baggage Car #3686 and Observation Car #3252.
  • 20-3436C:  2-pack Coach #3010 and Vista Dome #525.

All cars are 70' smooth-sided ABS passenger cars.  In addition to the 4 cars included in the set, other offerings available for separate sale (some for almost a year now) include:

  • 20-69170:  2-pack with Baggage Car #3662 and Coach #3100
  • 20-68170:  RPO #3600
  • 20-67170:  Full Vista-Dome #506
  • 20-66170:  2-pack with Sleeper named Sweetwater Valley and Diner #3366
  • 20-65170:  5-pack with 1 baggage, 2 coaches, 1 vista dome, and 1 observation (numbered differently from similar cars packaged in set 20-3436-1).

And lastly, don't forget that MTH also produced TWO road numbers (#4082, #4086) of R50B express reefers (20-94178) that were "uncatalogued" offerings, but done up in the matching Blue Goose paint scheme -- even including the blue trucks just like those on the passenger cars.

The full vista-dome is already very difficult to obtain, and I expect that the RPO and sleeper/diner 2-pack will follow suit very quickly now that the locomotive with cars has finally shipped.  The 5-pack is a bit redundant for those folks who purchased the new boxed set, which for only $100 more than the single-sale loco comes with 4 passenger cars.  Can't beat that deal at all.  Compared to the cost of the 5-pack at $429.95 MSRP, I can't imagine why anyone would purchase the 5-pack and the loco separately... unless, of course, you're forced to do that when the boxed set completely sells out (which will likely happen very soon).  If we see any boxed sets at York, they'll likely carry a hefty premium.

Hope this helps those interested in putting a great train together!

David

ETA:  Updated MTH product number of the R50B reefers to correct the typo.

Hi all, I now have the complete Blue Goose set finally finding the elusive Full dome and the second R50b reefer at The Train Loft ( still had a couple left as of last week). This is a fantastic looking set even though the cars are not prototypical. Well, it should have been and it is in my train world! The sounds are the best I have heard yet in a steam engine. If you bought the set with the four passenger cars I would highly recommend finding the separate sale cars listed above by Rocky Mountaineer to add to your train. You will not be disappointed. Just to add to the info above, be careful when searching for extra cars as the earlier produced cars have different style and color trucks and are not as detailed as the latest offerings listed above. This set is well worth adding to your roster. Have fun!! Going back to the train room now.    Paul

Joe,

Yes, the numbers on cars in the 5-pack are supposedly different than those of the cars included with the boxed set with loco.

The numbers of the 5-pack, as listed in MTH's product finder, are as follows:

  • Baggage car:  3683
  • Coach:  3009
  • Coach:  3028
  • Vista Dome:  523
  • Observation:  3249

Again, this information comes from MTH's product finder.  I can't confirm these #'s first-hand, because I did not purchase the 5-pack.   Nonetheless, even without the 5-pack, one can still make quite an extraordinarily impressive-looking train with all the other extra add-on cars (12, including the 2 R50B express reefers) that were recently issued within the past year.  I think the 5-pack will be more popular with folks who grab the locomotive as a separate-purchase item in their travels.  That may be the only other way to obtain an observation car... unless, of course, one shows up on eBay or at a train show.

David
