Hi. I just recently picked up an mth Long Island railroad RS-3 Diesel Engine With Proto-Sound 3.0. I primed the smoker and it seemed to be working fine. Soon afterwards the output of smoke diminished so I refilled the unit. The smoke hardly comes out now. I may have put too much fluid in as the side and top of the engine became oily. When it runs very little smoke can be seen. I have the smoke volume button all the way up and I haven't put any more liquid in the smoke stack. How can I fix this? Thanks. Also I used the mega steam smoke then I switched to the mth proto smoke fluid. Thanks.

This is not fun but blow down the stack. It may clear the stack.
A toothpick will break up the bubble seal.

You can buy a can of compressed air at the hardware or electronics store or maybe you have one handy to blow into the stack -- 1 or 2 short bursts. You'll have to make allowances for the mess you'll make as smoke oil can go everywhere. My standard approach is to carefully remove the shell and inspect the smoke unit by carefully removing the little board on top of the smoke reservoir. From there you can clean up any excess oil and adjust the wick if needed for better flow. I know, this sounds like a giant PIA but it's about an hour of work and if you've really flooded it the blow-in-the-stack approach won't help. I purchased a brand new GP20 a while ago that produced zero smoke. Blowing in the stack didn't do anything. I removed the shell and the top of the smoke unit and replaced/adjusted the wick. Smokes like crazy now.
Thanks Greg. The only problem is that I really have no idea how to do this. I'm afraid I'll mess things up. I tried the blow down the stack and it didn't work. Like I said it was smoking ever so faintly. Now it doesn't smoke at all. At what point do I put fluid in?
My Alco S2 does this all the time. Just what Gregg says. You have to get close to the stack and blow straight down. Close enough that with the smoke on, you get a face full. You'd be surprised that you actually miss the stack when blowing down it.
I recommend against the compressed air, that's much too strong a "blow" and will likely carry fluid into the fan chamber. Once it gets in there, your next issue will be the smoke fan motor will start making noise and soon fail.
