Boight a MTH dream engine off EBay that was shelved for A few years. Put one of those new type battery in that doesn’t, need replacement, running PS2. All works except smoke and for some reason can’t get sound loud, any thought why can’t make volume loud. I am also assuming smoke unit maybe burt or dried.

Item number?
Speaker most likely bad.
#1 bad speaker or wires to it
Had same issue. Speaker degraded even though no hours on engine.
replaced it, and was fine.
I'm assuming you're using DCS. Have you tried a feature reset?
on ps 2 very common for sound amp to go bad especially if you have had track or any kind of shorts. not expensive to replace. sometimes the speaker degradation from magnet flakes and grounds out on the frame will blow the sound amp!
ASC tech can do the repair!

If you have sound at all, first step. STOP RUNNING IT, and replace the speaker. The amp normally is either dead or working, top suspect here is the speaker.
We'll have to have more information to talk about the smoke, first how about the exact MTH item number. I really get tired of asking for this, it's basic information when you are looking for repair information.
Morning, USRA 2-8-2 steam engine, PS2, New York Central, Item NO: 20-3051-1
Thank you all for the information, I assume I can get the part from MTH, can I replay it myself? Not the best when it comes to working small pieces.. Will speaker only fix issue or is amp part of the deal? Did I mention the coupler does not work as well as with the smoke unit.
Are you running DCS or conventional?
Replace the speaker first, as it's by far the most likely suspect. As far as the smoke, you'll have to see if it's actually getting power. Can you hear the smoke fan motor pulsing as it runs?
Running DCS, about 19-20 volts on track using MTH4000 transformer, yes I can hear the smoke unit buzzing.

The 20-3051-1 Mikado has a 5-Volt board. I've had several of those fail, including the one in my 20-3051. I replaced it with a 5V board I pulled from a cosmetically challenged Railking engine. (BTW, I also had to redo the MUX boards and replace the speaker.) Quite a hassle, but the engine is running well now.
