I am contemplating which direction to go use the Lionel ASC or use the AIU. I know that you can only control 4 switches with the Lionel ASC and up to 10 switches with the MTH AIU. The question I have is, can I control my switches using the MTH TIU AIU combo and a Lionel legacy controller? I currently am controlling the switches with the package remote Atlas button switch. If I use this combo, my cost can be reduced by over $200. I'm all about reducing costs if I can.

Anything attached to the TIU can only be operated with the MTH remote. If your TIU is connected to your Legacy base you can issue TMCC-level commands to it via the MTH controller, but not the other way around.

Thanks PCJ. That's what I thought but I couldn't find anything that discretely stated that.
You can't operate the switches or accessories connected to a Lionel ASC or SC2 with TMCC emulation from the DCS Remote. The TMCC emulation is only for locomotives and uses TMCC (not Legacy) command structure.

There was a discussion on layout control a while back, basically DCS vs TMCC. While you can have a mix of control between the two, I think it would get confusing as to which remote to grab to activate a switch or accessary.
I went all Legacy for my layout control because I use DZ-2500 switch machines with Ross switches. The DZ-2500s can be activated directly by Legacy (through the SER module) so no AIU or ASC. Plus, the LCS software on my iPad is kind of neat, although I have a long way to go with it for my in-progress layout. So I am going to use Legacy for all my layout systems, switches, Legacy/TMCC engines and operating cars, and lights. I will use DCS for MTH engines.
For your Atlas switches, I think I would go the opposite direction; Layout control with DCS, TMCC/Legacy engines with Legacy. I agree that would be cheaper plus I think a bit simpler with fewer AIUs than if using ASCs.
