Hi all,

I recently purchased an MTH Wi-Fi Interface Unit. I have tried to get it to work for hours, and have yet to run a train--let alone even connect to one. Everything looks fine... The lights light up appropriately (all solid), the app connects to the unit, etc. however, when I go to add an engine, I either get a "WIU/TIU not found" error or a "Request Timeout" error when I go to add the engine. Similarly, in the app settings I get a "no active TIU's" message. Take a look at what I have below and if you have any input, please feel free to contribute.

My Setup:

TIU Rev L (most recent), all four inputs/outputs set up as fixed. Two are powered by a Z-4000, two are powered by bricks (Powerhouse and Z-1000). Auxiliary power to TIU from Z-500 brick plugged directly into TIU. All power supplies are connected into central power strip to alleviate phasing issues. Lionel Legacy system wired to track but not TIU. Three main lines and yard all completely electrically isolated, except for some signals/crossing gates that connect to all three main lines.

5 DCS engines, 1 Legacy engine

WIU Firmware: 1.10

TIU & Remote Firmware: 6.10

DCS App: 3.2.1 (Free Tier)

Devices: iPhone X, iOS 12.1.2; iPad Air 2, iOS 12.1

Miscellaneous Notes: My house, while in a rural area, has a decent amount of interference: two WiFi networks (2.4 and 5 GHz), with 2 dual band AP's, wireless landlines, a Sonos wireless audio network, and a ZigBee wireless network for Phillips Hue.

Things I've Tried:

  • Reset TIU, both factory and feature reset
  • Reset WIU multiple times
  • Reset and re-downloaded DCS WiFi app countless times (essentially before each attempt)
  • Updated (reflashed) WIU firmware
  • Taken every engine but 1 off the track, including all DCS and Legacy
  • Connected WIU to Home Wi-Fi network wirelessly, and via ethernet, and tried in MTH mode by connecting device directly to WIU
  • Replaced USB cable between WIU and TIU
  • Tried powering up just Fixed input 1, fixed input 2, or neither (just other inputs)

As you can see, I've tried nearly every "fix" that I've read on this forum, and have yet to find a combination that works. I'm looking for any last ditch efforts that anyone can think of or, do I simply have a defective unit? I am completely out of ideas here, and quite frankly upset. This isn't a BRAND NEW product, I would have thought the kinks would have been worked out by now.

Thanks in advance,

PhoebeSnow

Well? a couple of questions pop up here for me.

How strong is the DCS signal at the track? (using a working DCS engine)

I'm guessing that the layout works with the DCS remote, right?

or if signal issues, Have you tried getting the system to work with just a single short piece of track connected to the TIU?

I'm thinking something is dragging the signal down on the TIU and not reading the engines well enough. Probably not the problem if everything works good with the remote.

I get that message if the signal is poor at the track so that's my train of thought here. I use android so Barry might be better at helping here.

Have you tried disconnecting the Lionel command equipment?

So a few updates...

  • The system works flawlessly with the remote: I have had no problem running any or all of my engines with the remote for over a year now. To attempt to alleviate any signal issues that could exist, I moved the one  PS3 loco onto a piece of track that I cleaned really  well, and that has a feeder on that piece of track itself.
  • I have not tried unhooking the Lionel control system equipment, but I have taken my Legacy engines off the track.
  • Barry, I always wait until all the LED's are stabilized on the WIU, but I was unaware that the "refresh" button even existed. I am going to try that now.

Thanks for the tips! I will go try removing the Legacy system and using the refresh button in the app.

Well, lets still make sure that you are doing stuff correctly before declaring a bad unit. It does sound like there's something wrong though.

Having the layout run perfectly with the remote says to me, that the WIU isn't connecting properly to the TIU.

I'm just not sure what to try next. Any local friends have a WIU that you could test with? Any local hobby store have a layout where you could test your WIU?

Do the apple devices show wifi when in MTH mode? ( I don't know anything about IOS). I would stay in MTH mode until you get things sorted.

Does the TIU light on the WIU blink or stay steady?

Unfortunately, I really don't have any local friends in the hobby, nor any local hobby shops with DCS layouts. I called around seeing if there were any WIUs in stock that I could try out, but both of my local shops were sold out. All of the lights on the WIU stay steady, including the TIU light, and more recently I've been testing ONLY in MTH mode. I've confirmed that the iOS device stays connected to the MTH WiFi network during attempts.

I am probably just going to order another WIU and see if that helps. If not, they'll both go back and I'll just have to run my trains with my remote for the time being.

That being said, I truly appreciate the help from all of you. This forum is a godsend!
