Hi  all, Just purchased an Mth Z4000  for my 20 x 40 layout, and was wondering your thoughts about the circuit breaker protection and right amount of power for me as i will have approximately  6 - 7 locos running and 3 main lines with service yard and roundhouse and turntable, I beleive i will need more power in the future once its complete and would like to get some of those 180 watt power bricks from lionel but they seem to be out of stock for a while, seems to be the right fit for me in the beginning as i can run conventional and dcs that i have. I also have a lionel legacy system. Also wanted to say I have been having a great experience with National Railroad Worx in Mahwah NJ. I have been dealing with a nice young lady named Stacey thats been helping me out with a few of my recent purchases. She has top notch customer service and if you need something and she doesnt have it in stock she will most certainly try her best to find it and get it for you. Everything i bought was shipped out and received in a timely matter and she will try and do her best on getting you the right price,

Thanks for your replies

All I can say is there is a forum member here whose sign on escapes me at the moment.  He offered up a series of videos that were well worth the cost.  He had a layout the same size as yours, multiple levels, multiple locos operating (more than your 6-7), grades etc.  All of it ran nicely with a z4000.  What you did not mention is are the locos modern or post war.  I do know the older locos draw more power and that may be a reason to have extra amps available.

No one has ever mentioned this, as far as I know, but I believe the over current protection on variable track outputs of the Z4000 are rivaled by none, Why? Because the Z4000 output is electronically generated and cannot possibly allow the same short circuit currents that a traditional (transformer) power supply like  a Lionel 180 Watt would allow.
