I just bought a used MTH Z-4000 transformer.

The voltage on the Left hand throttle will not go to zero. When I turn the transformer on, with the throttle off, the voltage meter on the left throttle says “ 0 “ then immediately jumps to “ 10 “ and then keeps creeping up to “ 16 “. Moving the throttle from off to high does not affect the voltage.

I put an independent volt/amp meter on the output terminals, and the transformer is putting out the voltage it says.

Meanwhile on the Right hand throttle the voltage starts at “ O “ for " off " and increases to 22 volts as I apply increased throttle, and goes back to “ O “ when I throttle back.

Is this transformer defective, or is there an adjustment or something I can do to fix it ? Or should I just send it back ?

@hclark6345,

The transformer may need a load to be present to operate correctly and consistently, even though one output seesm to be operating correctly.

Do you have it connected to track, and does the track have a load on it?  (The best load for this test would be a lighted passenger car.)

Try operating the throttle again, and also conduct the measurements again, after connecting to track with a lighted car on it.
