I've been running my diesels of late to give them a little work out, so there's a bit of a problem sparks!
so I did this, first I cleaned the wheels with contact cleaner or any other cleaner then I use Flitz Polish
and polished the wheels clean. I mean the wheels a bright now and you know what the sparks stop and they
run a lot smoother now

I do that on all of my locomotives, Clean shiny wheels do not spark are less likely to build up gunk. This is also important for lighted cars also, they almost become flicker free!
Good posts. Clean track and wheels are essential. As you say, less sparking, less flicker.
I find that cleaning the plastic wheels on all the cars, not just the pickup wheels helps the track to stay clean longer.
What do you use to clean the gunk off the plastic wheels?
I have been using a spray electrical contact cleaner, they are generally safe on plastics. I put some paper towels over several track sections, soak them with the contact cleaner and run the cars back and forth over them until clean. I can do a lot of cars quickly this way. Citrasolve or other orange based cleaners will also work. I put that on the rolls on the track cleaning cars because it works and does not evaporate so fast.
