Let me begin by saying that I was advised by some here not to do, not to buy a Williams, that is specifically to go with my K-Line heavyweights. But owing to cost considerations I did so anyway. The GS-4 seems to be a bit of a throwback, all metal, heavier, no chuff sound, and effectively but simply detailed. I knew this stuff. What I didn't know is that compared to my other engines this thing is a race horse. At comparable settings, I run conventional, it goes much faster. The whistle is preset and toots out its 4 or 5 bars, but it sounds good. Well, its sounds OK. The bell is a metal clank. Fit and finish on the engine is attractively simple. The thing exudes reliability like the old time clippers my barber used to use. And the color match with my K-Line cars is good enough. This Williams engine reminds me of a farm boy come to visit his cousins in the city. Plain, brutish, and capable of getting the job done.

Included in the photo is a pretty good view of about half of my smallish layout. Hey, we do what we can, right?

Micheal I own one of these as well as several other Williams steam engines and both of their girls sets and I agree these are race horses. they will run and run however the smoke units in these do go bad rather quickly. the answer to this issue is either replace the unit with the factory type from Bachmann or there is a fellow who has modified lionel fan driven smoke units that he sells for these engines. if you would like i can give you the information.

Enjoy the GS4 and in the pic it looks great with the passenger cars

Hi Bobbie.

Could I bother you the info re smoke please?

I have a wonderful Williams Cab Forward that smokes like a beast but I'm thinking about it matching the RS that was installed.

Thanks,

James

I have always been a cheerleader for Williams and will continue to be. My first Williams engine was the Sante Fe F7 from 1997 and it still runs like it is brand new. I also have the Daylight GS-4 with 60' passenger cars and I love it. Some hi-railers would probably complain about the detail, scale, sound, etc. but they cannot complain about the reliability.

Can they complain about your satisfaction?
Alan

I have several Williams engines, an S-2 that will pull more than 25 freight cars on 042 curves. Most of my Williams are before Bachmann buyout and they still run like new, even my 18 year old Williams Crown Edition engines.

Just wish that Bachmann would add some more items to the Plasticville train car line-up, so far a cement hopper and a tank car.

I won't ever bad-mouth Lionel, because Lionel is what got me into this wonderful hobby.  And I'll buy Lionel Postwar til the day I die, and with 0 regrets.  Many of the classics like the Hudsons and Berkshires have dropped in price in recent years, and given their proven reliability, they're always a sound investment.  But lately, I haven't been finding myself browsing the modern Lionel catalog much.  It's not about any lost love; I love Lionel..  However, most new Lionel engines cost on average $500 to thousands of dollars.  By comparison, I can go to Trainworld right now (or, at least a few weeks ago) and buy a Class J 4-8-4 for $200.  Other units, like the SD90 diesels are/were on sale for around $100.  So for $500, I could have a Class J AND an SD90 for the cost of what one new Lionel engine costs.  True, Williams' units don't have all the fancy sounds and gingerbread, but as I'm a Postwar / conventional operator, I don't want all that stuff anyways (which will only mean more expensive repairs further down the road)..  I've got Williams units that are in their 20s, have tons of track time, and they run just as good as new.  For buying brand new, for me it's Williams hands down.

What I didn't know is that compared to my other engines this thing is a race horse. At comparable settings, I run conventional, it goes much faster.

It sure would be nice if Williams redesigned its GS4, N&W J, Berkshire, etc. to run like the Ten Wheeler (4-6-0) they released in 2011.  There are already plenty of fast-running conventional locos.  It would serve a unique purpose to have some choices that were simple, slow, and smooth!

Garfield,

I don't think that WBB will produce any special sets right now, as they are still trying to decide which roadnames will be made next for the new GP-30's.

Another news item from WBB is that they might discontinue the unpowered diesels, they say that cost for the circuit boards for the unpowered units are almost as high as a powered unit, so their profit margin is down if they keep the prices lower for the unpowered units.
