Being that I have four 513s I decided to make one of them into a lighted chicken car. So here are the photos I took during the process. I enjoy tinkering with the old trains imagining what a kid might do back in the day to add to his consist. I copied the silhouettes from one of my O gauge poultry dispatch cars, I have all but 4 in my collection. The chicken size is perfect for standard gauge. In the photos you can see the spacing between the rows was adjusted to match up with the new openings. All in all a fun project that added a new car to my freight train.

Neat idea!
Very Nice, did you use a dremel or nibbler to cut the sections out?
Great idea.
Yes, what is the tool you're using in the last photo ?
great idea you hatched !!!
Thanks for the compliments !! well appreciated . A few of you asked what was used to cut the metal slats out. I must confess it was not done by me but by my friend who is a jeweler. I took the photo. Anyway she used a jewelers saw with a 4/0 blade. It is basically a coping saw with a VERY thin hack saw blade in it. I consider the car having 4 sections, 2 on each side which took about 15 to 20 minutes per section. At some point in tyhe near future I will go back and finish cleaning up the cuts and I am looking for a decent crate/feed bag photo to put behind the sliding doors. That should finish it up real nice. I have in mind to make another, only this time it will be a pork dispatch car. Thanks for your interest.
great project, and turned out nice!
