My steam mallet started smoking then got real hot to even touch the engine. shipping back to lionel to repair.I have only been running the train for a month.

It sounds like one of the third rail roller assemblies might have shifted, causing it to bridge the center rail and one of the running rails. If that is not the root cause, I would look inside to see if any of the insulation is missing from the wires that connect to the third rail collectors, or if any of the special insulators that prevent the collector wire from touching the metal frame are missing.
