...are friendly with trees" goes the latest GE TV commercial. Her diesels also happen to sound like they have steam whistles. Must be a part of someone's big bang theory.

Wood burning steam loco would love trees!!

I was thinking the same thing, you would think GE would know what the HORNS on THEIR locomotives would sound like.
Having said that, I think thats another testament to how iconic and "timeless" the steam locomotive is. Be it in image on a sign or whistle on TV. Steam is to trains as a "coke" is to any carmel colored carbonated beverage.
You are right about that!

I saw that too, or perhaps I should say I HEARD it. Thought it was just me.
Perhaps the planes with bird-like wings, and other fantasy elements in the commercial, it wasn't a stretch to have a diesel sound like a steamer?!!
What was that a ES44Ac
Makes perfect sense..GE was trying to burn coal slurry in the FDL a generation or so back. They won't be happy 'til they've reinvented the Shay...with 79 MPH gearing !
A girlfriend some years ago made for my O gauge Christmas layout, a village out of needlepoint, including a station, and not bad, either. It is packed away somewhere....
She did not make a train, though...but buildings..
Hope you let her out for air now and then.

I guess GE hires goofy moms.
All the women railroaders I have met know the difference between a steam whistle and an air horn.
Their best unit in recent times had to have been the U18b. Reason: less chooch
equals less trouble !
My mom can beat up your mom.
my guess is that GE hired a advertising agency to do the olympic ad, it was run pass the GE ad managers who gave a thumbs up without paying attention to what was in it. Then again maybe they did and did it to see who was paying attention.
Speaking of ad goofs anyone remeber the JC Penny(?) ad for Lionel train steamer but the tender was facing wrong way and I think a set of wheels were not on the track.
My friend Halsey designed the boat in the opening shot!
