My MOW train (video)

Flash, Nice train.  You might be interested in this.  We are located close to the Boston to NYC run of the Amtrak and last week I noticed at our station, where they have a small work yard, a bunch of MOW equipment standing down.  It has been there for a week and they are probably taking Christmas week off before restarting.  We don't have a lot of security issues and I was able to mosey around the equipment without anyone chasing me off.  Very interesting.  One unit I did not photograph is the car very similar to yours that is used for ballast. Rigged up just like yours with the small shovel attached to the top of the car.  I would love to see all of these in actual operation.

Nice train, Flash.  Is that an Ertl Case backhoe?  How do you have it mounted on the gondola?  I'm thinking about doing the same thing for my MOW train.

Yes, it's an ertyl case model. I will have to take a close picture of it so you can see the pieces I glued to the outriggers and loader.

I see you also have a couple of, what appear to be, side dump cars.   What are they, Flash?

Yes, those are MTH Railking side dump cars. 

I need to get ballast rocks to fill them with. 

Flash, a few years back there was a huge slide that took out track going over the Cascade's in Oregon.  At the UP yard in Eugene, Oregon were lines of the same type dump cars filled with large rock to help stabilize the slide area.  Each consist had to be at least 40 - 50 cars long.  This went on for about 3 months or more.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you take these pictures? They were replacing ties in East Greenwich RI 3-4 months ago heading toward Warwick RI with what looks like the same equipment.

To be prototypical, the backhoe should have a grapple attachment for picking up and dropping the old ties. But I can't figure out how to make such an attachment for this model.

Flash, thanks for posting those additional backhoe photos.  Now I have to get the Ertl Case backhoe, maybe the excavator and a few of those dump cars!

Flash, another quick question, how do you have the excavator secured to the flat car? 
I'm planning on using the means shown in an article that was in the OGR magazine a few runs back.

Gravity.

There are some wood pieces glued to the deck to chock it in place.

When I worked in commercial vehicle enforcement I used to stop those trucks that had their loads secured by "gravity."

Well I've bought a used Ertl John Deere backhoe for the gondola via eBay.  Now I have bought the excavator and a wheeled loader for the flat car.  Now all I need are the dump cars.  Flash you've inspired me to make up a more interesting MOW train!
