From this........

WbB GP9 loco bought from a OGR vendor.......

To this right now........

GP9RG1

GP9RG2

The procedure I covered in my caboose 'How To' I did recently. Long post short I removed the tampo printing

by sanding it off with very fine grade sanding sticks. Then washing the shell and applied two coats of

Dupli-color gray primer sealer from a spray can.

Stay tuned......

Today was a honeydew day so not much done.....

I gotta say I love these William WbB GP9 locos. I have a MTH Premier unit that while better detailed and a great looker......the number of GP9 projects I want to do would make MTH locos prohibitive.  One area of the WbB loco that needs a little help is the fuel tank. It's rather narrow to allow it to run through O-27 switches and not hang on the light. But as mine will run on much wider radius and no O-27 switches I decided to correct mine. I cut it into three pieces and glued .188 thick plastic stock in between the cuts I made....then sanded them smooth. I then coated the inside of the tank with epoxy to make it more rugged. It's not a major change but one that I did on my WbB

CSX Dash9 loco and it made a difference.

Without intention to hijack your post I want to show you what I made to my Williams GP before remade the whole frame.

A pilot cover, make the pilot and frame gap closer and the chance to add more details and obviously kadee couplers.

Glad you fix the tank! really will make your engine look a lot better.

Andre.

Correct!

Think of it this way.....

You get a parking lot ding in the driver door of your car. The body shop fixes the ding, preps the door by light sanding of the door....but if the paint is stable they leave it alone....and repaint.

I feel the same way with model trains. If the original paint is stable...leave it alone. Most mass produced model trains have a very thin coat of a synthetic lacquer to speed drying time. So detail is not covered. Check that photo of the GP9 in primer.....detail is sharp as original. Then I use thin coats so covering is not an issue.

I have stripped models to the bare plastic or metal....just not always needed.

WRONG!!!!!!

I was able to find a Rock Island Blue GP9 and bought it. Plus it reminded me I have not done anything for my home road.....The Denver and Rio Grande Western in a long time. Had some photos of Rio GP9 units.....so this one became just that.

GP9DRGW2

Nothing real fancy here. A few things like altered fuel tank and altered handrails on end platforms.

GP9DRGW1

Dupli-color primer and black paints. Tamiya orange spray can. Microscale decals and Testors dullcoat.

Thanks for looking!!!

BTW.....How is the D&RGW my home road and I model it's branch in West Virgina????

Mine is Denver NC to Rio Grande Ohio.....thus, at one time, I had lots of pre-made decals and RTR cars.......

Not too far off!!!!!

I will model a small portion of the east coast based D&RGW.....the mid West Virginia section. Denver NC is not much bigger the Rio Grande but it works out well for a model RR!!
