Clever! I use a bit of sweatshirt cloth and a Bachmann Heavy Haulers trolley sideframe assembly...

When you use one multiple times a day, the factory made foam cradles make sense, mine has seen a lot of miles...
I put a rag in the bottom to catch any oil that might drip out.
I can see that. I work with N gauge, HO, and O Gauge and have a few different size wooden mitre boxes in my garage.
Then, of course, there is the rest of my 60" x 80" egg crate foam I can cut up and throw away until I am in a nursing home.

John, that’s a great idea! I have a miter box like that on my workbench, but never thought of that!
Just be sure there isn't anything in the foam that will damage the paint. Some foam is better than others for paint.

I always surround my engines with paper towels.
