I just bought a left and a right switch from Menards and there are some issues:
1. Size.
I have always wondered why Lionel made their O72 switches 14-5/16" long on the straight side. Now I must wonder why Menards has chosen 14-1/16" for 2 rails of the straight section and 14-1/8" for the third, inside rail?
2. Funky looking controller that vaguely looks like a steam engine.
It has a 3' cord and a 6' extension. There are 4 wires in the cord. Are they planning more functionality in the future? To me the question is why 2 push buttons instead of a single toggle switch with center off? What can go wrong when my grandchildren push both push buttons simultaneously?
3. Potential derailment at the Frog.
The guide rails at the Frog are either too short or positioned wrong. If a truck is just slightly askew, the wheel can take the wrong path through the Frog.
4. The rail section that signals to throw the switch dips when it meets the frog and causes a sudden jump for the wheels.
5. Gap when the switch is thrown for the curve.
Both the left and the right switch does fine going straight, but they both have a gap when thrown for the curve. Maybe the connecting rod needs to be a fraction longer.
6. Switch motor is not reversible.
It appears that the switch motor is not reversible. But a clever modeler should be able to make it work, maybe? It should not be difficult for Menards to modify this in the future.
Overall, these look like great switches in the making.
