There is a special place in **** for people who abuse dogs or any animal for that matter.

They are as innocent as children and I believe crimes against them should carry the same penalties as those against humans.

I can not fathom how people could do such things.

I feel guilty killing bugs (except roaches)...

Going back to Earl's original post, my dog Joker (RIP) had to wear the "cone of shame" for a couple weeks until a sore on his leg healed up. He was a big dog (Rottweiler mix) and the stupid cone would catch on furniture and door jambs when he walked around the house. He and I were both relieved when we were finally able to take it off. I enjoyed everybody's dog pics. Haven't got a new pup yet since Joker passed away last year.

Here's my Train Buddy. Chelsea, AKA Chelsea Dog; She was a shelter dog we adopted and trains weren't a problem for her at all. She was our baby and passed away 2 years ago. We had great times together. The adopted cats on the other hand still try and steal the coke bottles from the polar bear cars.  Chelsea hated the coat when she headed outside in the winter. Trains, oh yes, this is a train thread. That's a Hogwarts express in the background running on fastrack.  Terry

Took me forever to find this picture.

When I used to live in CA I had a white lab named Thor. ( that was his name from the shelter).  Thor used to accompany me to the Joshua Tree and Southern.  Normally he quite enjoyed these trips and he got to freely roam around.  In this pic however he's not really happy with me as he is tied up to some steel that later became a very impressive bridge.

Thor and his partner in crime Peanut had to stay behind in CA when we moved back to PA.  Last I heard he was living large at an friend's mom's house where he routinely gets to finish the dinner leftovers!

Here are my two.

Dog #1 is Rusty.  13 year old Bassett.  He is near the end.  He sleeps most of the time, he has to wear depends, and all the buckets are there so he does not walk into the fireplace or scape his paws on the brick.  He is about 90% blind, deaf, almost no rear leg operation.  Very sweet dog.  We adopted him at 11 yrs old - was separated from his family in AL in a tornado and found as a stray.

Dog #2 is Cooper.  12 year old beagle.  A shelter dofg we got at 2 yrs old. Spoiled and very loyal to me.  He actually will come down to the basement and sleep on the couch when I go down there to do train stuff.  Given that he is a chicken at heart and hates power cord (I have no idea why), he stays clear of the trains.

Great pictures everyone!  This past summer when my poodle could not get into my living room quick enough because my trains were running past the entrance way, she decided with no hesitation to jump over them when they were running by.  This was something I did not teach her nor encouraged her to do.  In fact I frowned upon it and could not believe it when she first did it.  She did it couple more times throughout the summer.  Eventually, I figured out she would only do it when she was in hurry to get outside to do her job!!

At 1:50 in the following video, you can see her jump over my steam engine.  She is a lot of fun and a very smart dog!

In 1994, a kitten was given to me following my first wife's passing, by a sympathetic

co-worker who didn't want me to just sit and dwell in mourning.  Buddy was part of a

litter gathered up with his mother by our factory's pest control guy.  He would turn

such animals over to a lady who took care of them and gave them homes when

possible.  This little 'fuzzy' used the litter box the first time and never missed it once.

As for the connection with trains, he never bothered Christmas tree ornaments and

even took pains to avoid disturbing the big battery-powered train that circled under

the tree.  What a guy!  Never had to scold him.  And he was my best friend for

sixteen years.  I cried for him as for a child lost.

Well here is a photo of our dog, Annie.  Short for Little Orphan Annie, since she was abandoned near our home when she was a pup.  She makes a better jigsaw puzzel enthusiast than a model railroader.  A couple of years ago, I purchased a Polar Express set specificly for under the Christmas tree.  The first time, and every time I run it, she attacks the train, and knocks it off the track.  Last year, I put the train out, but never ran it.  We are in a new house to us as of 2 years ago, so I don't have a layout yet.  I put some shelves about a foot from the ceiling in the family room, and run trains around the loop.  If I do it when she is upstairs, I can get away with it if I turn the sound off.  Otherwise she comes running down barking at the train.  Other than her dislike of trains, she has been anexcellent pet.2013-07-29 18.38.03

Earl,

Thank you and everyone for this post.  I missed the first posting of this thread and just found it.  My English Springer rescue train buddy suddenly passed away early the other morning from what appeared to be a ruptured mass on either his spleen or heart.  I was unable to resuscitate him.

We adopted him at age 6 and he turned 10 last month.  He was my velcro-Springer and loved to go everywhere with me including the basement to run the trains.  Although he would stand up on hind legs to watch the trains, I hid his Christmas presents that I bought earlier this month on the layout (I think he knew they were there, but he played along).  He was the best dog I ever had or known.  I miss him very much.  Please give your "Train Buddy" an extra hug and treat; it's definitely deserved and appreciated.

Jeff, don't try to avoid the joy.  I had a springer pup from a breeder and my most recent at age 6 from a Springer rescue group.  I did not realize how many breed specific rescues exist through out the country until we lost our first English Springer.  I'm sure there are some good ESS rescues that serve your region.  I hope that my family will be fortunate to find another ESS rescue Train Buddy sometime next year.
